Finally I found a guy on eBay who didn't want a fortune for a simple dongle. He was even nice enough to ship to Canada for me! Not to mention he replied to my email (about international shipping) in less than 5 minutes. That's got to be some kind of eBay record

Now all I need is software! I've been scouring the www.unna.org archives but there's so much stuff! I never imagined there was so much Newton software...

So I've come here for advice. On what to get. I have about 2.6 MB free on the 2100s internal RAM and a little more than 30 MB free on my 32 MB Flash card.

Running out of space is not really a concern at this point

So far the only thing I really know I need is the drivers for my 3Com ethernet card (which I couldn't add drivers for since I didn't have a dongle. Bah) and NewtonWorks with all associated files (spellcheck and whatnot)

So I'm looking for input on the best Internet browser, email client, and other cool stuff. It should all work with NewtOS 2.1 (717260) What things do you guys (and gals?) have that you find makes your Newton experience that much better? Cool hacks, neat apps, whatever you like...

Suggest away!

Avi's backdrop is an absolute must.

Many like dashboard, but i don't care for it.

i guess before i go listing tons of software, might i ask: What do you plan to do with your newton?

BTW, $14 was an awesome price for that dongle! I've seen those go for much, much higher.

Congrats and welcome to the team!

if you haven't already get signed up for the newton talk list, that's the place for up to date newton news. yes, there still is news. www.newtontalk.net

There's a certain order to which to load the drivers for ethernet, when I get home, I'll link the page here for you.

I'll check 'em both out Right now the dongle's still in the mail... as soon as it gets here I'm busting out the old 520 to start loading stuff

Well, I'd like to be able to use it as a kind of laptop replacement... I know it's not quite iBook-level but I've got the *ahem*G4*cough* to do the heavy lifting... I'd like to be able to do basic email with a program that allows me to get POP email and leave it on the server... I'd like a nice browser that can display thing like these forums, basic news sites, etc. (I assume images are turned off or simply not displayed on a Newton to speed load time?)

I got the Newt about two months ago now. I've waited a long time to find a dongle I could stomach spending on... Needless to say playing with the Names, Dates and Assistant got a bit boring after a while

I thought it was a great deal too. Glad to see I'm not too naive about eBay prices

Thank you for the welcome. I just signed up for the NewtonTalk list too. Thanks for the link.

That would be great! I found this page Is it the right page? My ethernet card is this one. The 3CXE589DT with X-Jack. It's in mint condition. I was quite pleased when I got it. Now I just need to see if it works.

Yeah, my main failure was not also loading the Farralon driver too, the 3-com is like an add-on to it.
Look into simplemail as a mail program, I've got it running on my 2100 with my Earthlink account, fine. Even found an old earthlink/newton support page, but got a tech in chat to help me out with the smpt set-up.
I've also got Newt's cape on there for browsing, but have not played with it enough to give a recommendation.

Woo. I almost missed that. Thanks for pointing it out.

Cool. SimpleMail looks nice. Free too! NewtsCape looks interesting too. What about Net Hopper? Anybody used that?

Hey! I just found a VT100 terminal emulator too! Supports telnet!! Check it out! So if I enable telnet on my OS X box I can control it from my Newt? Whoa.
