WOW!!! SCHWEET!!!

Great deal on the 7100 and the LCs. Got any spare 72 pin SIMMs? A 16 megger is cheap, and would be great on that 4 meg LCIII you have. On the 7100 however, i'd steer away from 9.1. Load 8.5.1 (stay away from 8.6...it was crash city on my PB) or 8.1 on there, and see how much faster it is! BTW: Welcome to the 68k Macintosh Liberation Army. Have fun.

8.1 is nice on first generation PowerMacs. Get more RAM and run 7.1 on the LC III.

catsdorule, thanks for the warm welcome! Maclover5 and oldmacman, thanks for the advice! I actually have a number of 72 pin SIMMs lying around-- a few 16MB sticks and way too many 8MB units. So I will upgrade that second LCIII to 20MB.

As for OS9.1 on the 7100, I must say I'm absolutely shocked at how snappy it is. Perhaps the fact that it's a 7100/80 (rather than a 7100/66), that the video is offloaded to the AV card, and that it has 104MB RAM makes 9.1 faster than it would be on a stock 7100. I don't know what it is, but generally I agree with y'all that 8.1 is a great OS for PPC601-based machines (and the Performac 603-based machines as well).

I'm not sure exactly what I'm gonna do with all this stuff, but here are my plans as of now:

(1) Steal an rj45 LC ethernet card out of one of the LCIIIs, take one of the 32MB SIMMs and the 750MB HD out of the 7100, and take a full 68040 CPU out of a Quadra 610 (also obtained free), and put all of the stuff into a Quadra 605 I've just purchased off the LEM Swap list for $10. As I'm sure you already can tell, my plan is inspired by Dana's "Angela" Q605 (thanks Dana, you're an inspiration!). I will then try to install A/UX or NetBSD on the Q605. (It's not an officially supported machine for either, but I'm guessing the presence of the full '040 CPU should make it work).

(2) Take two pairs of 4MB 30-pin SIMMs from two of the LCIIs and put them and a spare HD in the SE/30 to take it from 5/40 to 17/250 or 20/250 (depending on which of the unit's current SIMMs I decide to leave in the second bank of 4). Find an SE/30 ethernet card (ideally the one with the FPU for the '030 CPU) and put NetBSD or Linux on it.

(3) Beg, borrow, swap or steal a PCI PowerMac (I'm thinking 7600) and make it a triple-boot system with Mac OS, some version of BSD or Linux, and BeOS -- yes, that great BeOS PPC preview release from 1998.

(4) Network the Q605, SE/30 and PCI PowerMac together and spend the rest of my days learning and experimenting (and not having a life!)...

So I guess I'm totally insane, eh?

your not totallt insane untill you have at least 15 voices in your head, and they have conversations with eachother, instead of telling you to do something.

maceo,
The SE/30 already has an FPU, so you're good to go. I would like to try a copy of AU/X on one of my SE/30's (if I had a copy of it, that is).

Good hunting.

go to http://www.tracker-tracker.com and search for A/UX if you want a copy, I also think they have the CD images for download at http://www.archaic-apples.com, check both out for details.

hope this helps y'all run a/ux
