I have a Classic II that I would like to upgrade to recognize >10MB of RAM. I've read that the RAM ceiling for this and other similar models is a somewhat arbitrary function of the ROMs.There are two 40-pin socketed ROMs on the motherboard of the Classic II. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but would it be possible to simply replace these with the ROMs from, say, a LC 520 to increase the RAM ceiling to 32MB? Thanks for any advice. |

No. Unfortunately (for you), the LC520 and Classic II are both based on different architectures. Therefore, if you put LC520 ROMs into the Classic II, when you turn on Classic II, 520 ROMs will wake up, and see that they are living in a different architecture, that he does not understand, and, well, it won't work! But seriously, there's no way its going to work. If the LC520 is anything like the LCIII (and i suspect it is), then it has a different number of ROMs than the Classic II. -------------------------- Pizzabox LCs RULE!!!!!!! Thanks for the response. The ROMs in the LC 520 and Classic II are the same physically (two 40-pin socketed chips). A photograph of the LC 520 motherboard is here: http://www.micromac.com/macpixpages/a_mac_lc_520.html You mention the LC III which is pictured here: http://www.micromac.com/macpixpages/a_mac_lc_iii.html It also appears to have the same physical ROM setup. I understand that the architecture of each machine is unique, but I thought there might be some cross-compatibility such as with the old 512k/512ke ROMs. I suppose the real question is: since other ROMs will physically fit in the ROM sockets on the Classic II motherboard, is there any harm in trying? Do I run the risk of frying the ROMs or some other component by attempting a LC 520-to-Classic II ROM swap? Thanks for any thoughts.

get the IC's info and make sure they are the same part or at least are pin-compatible parts before trying. check the gemulator (?) site, applespec and some other sites (applespec is riddled with errors) to make sure the size of the files in the ROMs are compatible.jt ™.
