Howdy, folks! I'm interested in teaching myself the basics of programming, preferably in OS X, as that's what I run on my PowerBook G4. I understand many of the fundamentals of the art (I used to be quite the AppleBASIC hacker in my youth), but I never learned any 'modern' programming languages. From what I understand, Coco(sp?) makes it really easy to churn out simple apps in X- what do I need to get started? Where should I start looking? I'd prefer to find whatever info I can online, but I could resort to buying/checking out books, if there are any that you folks recomend... I'm not looking to start writing my own clone of Office or anything like that... yet... but rather I'd like to learn the basics of how to make goofy little programs. For instance, I saw on versiontracker recently a little program that puts a bunch of see-through squares on the desktop, and using the mouse, you can 'nudge' them and bounce 'em around the screen. I'd love to learn that sorta thing! Any tips? Thanks! SpaceBoyAppleBASIC FOREVER! O'Rielly books are supposed to be very good, and sometimes you can find nice tutorials floating around the internet for free. I admit, though, that I am fond of my two-volume "C For Dummies" set.Wonko The Sane Engineer-in-training 3 Macs Liberated "You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool."- Wonko The Sane |

Hi. I started programming in os x a while ago. I think the best thing to do is NOT use apple's docs, as they make no sense to anyone when he or she is first starting. Here are some links:cocoadevcentral.com good tutorials http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/CocoaSource.html a huge list of cocoa apps w/ source code. Good for learning. oreilly.com has a huge amount of tutorials and info on their site, you need not get a book. I would also recommend you start with learning C before you try to learn Obj-c or Java, which are the two things you can program w/ in cocoa. If you want, you can also create applications w/ applescript via AppleScriptStudio, or ASS.
