Does anyone know how to use winimage? The instructions don't seem to work for idiots like myself.

I downloaded the program, but don't know what to do with it. My Mac is still spitting out my disks that my pc made on winimage. Does this make sense? It doesn't for me either.

Is there some type of kiddie pool for people like myself to play in?

thanks

Thanks!

Thanks Danny for replying.

You can find it at Winimage.com or:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gvollant/download.htm

I think it's the same site.

PC/Mac exchange sounds more to the point. I'm trying to find a basic MacPaint and MacWrite program so I can exchange basic text from Mac to PC and Back. But before I can install it on my Mac, it's got to be able to read the floppies I make for it.

I figure I could just go to Kinkos with a couple of floppies and download Macwrite and MacPaint onto one of their Macs, (that's what I had to do with 6.0.8) but that's going to get expensive and I may as well use the resourses I have (like a PC).

I feel like you guys are way out of my leauge!

Thanks for looking into it!

I've had success with HFV Explorer. What I do with it is to create a floppy-sized disk image file, then copy what I want to it. Next, I write the disk image file to the floppy disk. So far, it's worked every time I have tried it.

Thanks Quinterro!

Where do you find HVF Explorer?

Does it have a way to format PC disks into an Apple format so my Mac can read the image?

thanks!

WINIMAGE 6.0

Copyright 1993-2001 Gilles Vollant

For Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT/2000/XP and Windows 3.1 with Win32s

PURPOSE

~~~~~~~
This Zipfile contains WinImage 6.0, standard and professional
version, and the self extractor.
This is the English version of WinImage 6.00. For other languages,
you need to download the translation Zipfile on the WinImage Internet
Web site http://www.winimage.com/download.htm .
STEP ONE
~~~~~~~~

You need to extract winima60.zip in a new directory (for example,

c:\winimage). You can use WinZip (http://www.winzip.com) for this

task.

You can also start the install file winima60.exe.

STEP TWO

~~~~~~~~
If you are running MSDOS + Windows 3.1x, you need to install Win32s 1.30.
There is a link to download Win32s at http://www.winimage.com/othertl.htm
You can also add FDREAD.EXE to your AUTOEXEC.BAT to read 1.68/DMF floppies.
(Note : FDREAD is only for MSDOS 5.x/6.x, NOT for Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP)
STEP THREE
~~~~~~~~~~

If you want to run WinImage, just run WinImage.exe.

The full documentation is in the WinImaUS.HLP help file. The additional

features of WinImage 6.0 are in the "Evolution of WinImage topic".

Don't hesitate check the web site for up-to-date info.

Does not tell you much does it?

But on the download.com page a comment stated this:

quote:
"This is not a good program."
I have used CopyQM for many years for copying disks. I decided to try a Windows program. I first copied a disk with CopyQM then tried it with Winimage and it would just stop with an error 655?? cannot read sector 0.

Mabye if you had a copy of CopyQM it would work?
I googled this : < http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=CopyQM&btnG=Google+Search >

This file will let you use DOS Disks with system 6 http://homepage.mac.com/catsdorule/AFE.zip I zipped it for your convinience.

Now your only problem is to get that to your mac. and you can use pc disks, if you used system 7 i can send you the version that will let you mount them on your desktop.

Thanks Danny!

Perhaps I'll just blow off the winimage thing and try the Copy QM instead. Quinterro aslo mentioned trying out the HVF Explorer. These sound a bit more stable since they're running in Dos. Back to the good old days. But hey, that's why I got my Mac Classic in the first place!!!

I guess I can just go to Kinkos and dowload it onto their Mac, then transfer it onto the floppy and install it on my Mac Classic.

Did I miss anything?

Thanks for your patience. I thought I was losing my mind with those winimage instructions too. !

Nope you didn't miss anything I suggest that you go the mac way it is much more easy to make a mac work with a PC then Vice-versa so just get macintosh-PC exchange and you will be able to use your regular PC disks without reformating. Also Use the "Default" setting that will just copy the files and not translate.

One problem I have had with PC Exchange is the truncating of file names with older versions of MacOS.

The link for HFV Explorer is http://gamma.nic.fi/~lpesonen/HFVExplorer/. While it is simpler to use PC Exchange, using this program I can keep the long file names....
