I am selling a 33600 modem on ebay.

I tried to test it with the Quadra(out of interests sake with some cables I have)

It didn't work.

but then I forgot what my origional modem was set to.

I went through the modems & thought I got my modem working with the 3com impact isdn 64k mlppp modem driver, & it appeared to me that I had faster internet access without so much freeze from Netscape.

It seemed to work the first time then it seemed not to work. The modem driver highlighted at the moment is Farallon Netopia 56k.

What I want to do is test all the drivers & see which gives me best performance.

here is the snag.

When using Apples ppp it connects and oh so helpfully reports "communicating at unknown speed"

What the hell use is that?

I found that out ages ago and it really wound me up so I tried to keep quiet & just ignore it.

ok calming down.......

Is there a program/extension or somthing that I can use to give me an indication of what speed I am getting from my internet connection?

I am using a 56k modem with dial up which if I remember correctly the modem is hayes compliant.

Some (a few I've owned too) modems connect, and by default report a string of "CONNECT" and nothing more - they just tell the computer that a connection has happened. Depending on the modem, you may have an extra AT command to tell the modem to report either the modem->modem speed, or the modem->computer speed... modem->modem is the one most people are interested in - for that though, you'd have to look up the manual/instructions for that particular modem.

Also - if you do get connected at, say, 48,000 one time - 5 minutes later it may have dropped down, or gone up some... th rate is variable and changes accoring to line condition - the better a modem, the better it'll pick a reliable speed for whichever condition the phoneline is.

Well I found the modem box & the installation guide inside & the pc CDrom with the pc installers.

In the installation guide it points me to Path:\manual\motorola(Rockwell)\External

When I looked this path didn't exist!

Here is what is on the box:-

Mentor

56k v.90 standard
connexant
a heritage of Rockwell Technologies

56Kbps External Voice Modem

ITU-T V.90 56,000bps
33,600BPS Data Transmit Rate/V.34+
56,000BPS Data Download Rate/K56 flex V.90
Simultaneous Voice & Data/SVD
14,400BPS Fax Transmit Rate/GROUP|||
Video Conference Ready/Support H.324
Speakerphone/FDSP
Free communication software

Also in the installation guide it says that HS LED lit on the front panel means:-

HS High Speed
In Command mode, lights when DTE-to-modem speed is 4,800 bps or above.

This led is lit

Yeah, well 4800 bps isn't exactly fast, you know.

You may lagh at me & think me terribly ignorant.

Thing is I have just read the virus post & it continually mentions 64k packets.

will the said software work on my quadra 840av?

will I have 13 year old kids flooding my system?

will it make my internet access more efficient?

Don't worry about the script kiddies, they don't target 68k Macs...

Are these programs going to work with my mac?(os 8.1) or are they going to mess up my (delicate enough already) internet connection?

FreePPP is fine. I used it for a long time on my 6100 and my IIsi. My favorite feature is the connect/disconnect icon it puts up next to the clock.

As for making your connection better, the PPP that came with OS 8.1 is just as good as FreePPP. It's all a matter of choice.
