Thought you might like to know that thanks to a RAM upgrade i did to a Mac Plus this afternoon, i now have a very funky looking keytag. A 256k 30 pin SIMM. Looks sorta funny dangling from my keyring in one of those holes in the SIMM...

According to the Mac Bible, 3rd edition, they were worthless back in 1990.

I have a dead 4 MB 72 pin SIMM on my key ring. Makes my keys easier to find sometimes! Some of the chips fell off of it though, so it doesn't look as cool as it did when I first put it on there. Also on my key ring are two spindle spacers that go between each of the platters. They look cool, and people are like, what the **** is that on your keychain?!?. One is from a 10 megger 5.25 seagate bearing eater drive out of an old 286... the other out of a 210 megger conner clicker out of my crappard hell 486!

I made fridge magnets out of the 8 256k 30-pin SIMMs for my old Mac II (don't worry, my Mac II is still purring along with a maxed-out 8 MB). The sticky-back magnet sheets that convert a standard business card into a fridge magnet are the perfect length for 30-pin SIMMs.

You know, it seems strangely appropriate to use old RAM post a reminder to myself on the fridge.

I made a CD rack out of a dead IIgs. Just took the top cover, flipped it on its bottom and removed the metal shielding (without first drawing blood, of course)

How about dead drives? I've got a few, and if I use them for doorstops we'll be literally kicking them around, amidst the dirt and dust bunnies. Has anyone got a better use?

RE: Dead Drives: Many HDs have some serious magnets inside the spindle motor and head actuator (OK, I've got an unnatural attraction for magnets). You can also make wind chimes out of the platters.

For old hard drives, take off the cover and remove all the platters and heads and the spindle motor. Put a clock movement (they cost about five dollars at a hardware store) where the spindle motor was and put the platters and heads back in. I see people selling these "hard drive clocks" all the time at flea markets.

I just throw my dead HDs in a pile. That or I take them apart and leave it on my desk or someplace where I'll forget about it.
