I *finally* got ahold of the special WD-13 -> DB-15 video cable for the Portrait Display that was sitting collecting dust! It only set me back $5.38 at the Computer Renaissance in Rochester, NY (we were taking older sis back to school up there). Nice store, with the exception of StyleWriter II printers going for $79.99. But I digress...

But woo! 8-bit greyscale @ 640x870!...I think I might have broken the vertical-position adjuster thingy, though, by shoving my teeny screwdriver too far in...

and enough ranting/raving/bragging...

The font looks a lot like Crillee, from Star Trek/Escape Velocity. It's not exactly it, though. What's so special about it?

1. Nope
2. It's kinda nostalgic...some of our older comrades should be able to identify it (scooby doo, er jt, where are you?)

Well, Apple only made that one portrait display. And yes, the maximum bit-depth it could display was 8-bit greyscale. There were other companies (Radius, among others, IIRC) who made color AND pivoting portrait displays

jt would build his own fonts (and has!) in Fontographer before using a Fugly POS like that font! what the heck is that monstrosity? i don't think there's anything that ugly even in the FontBank collection!

i don't think Radius or anybody else ever built a color portrait, just Pivots. who was the maker of the 17" pivot? that one was kinda cool! i did some experimentation with running my Portrait on the G4 under 10.1 when the possibility of doing so was discussed somewhere, mighta been MAF or Ars, dunno. no grayscale support in X AFAIK, so the screenshots were in color for that too!

p.s. it looks like somebody beat Peignot Bold Oblique severely with an ugly stick, btw! but i have no idea about the origin of this font.

nope, are you trying to tell me that a company paid a graphic "artist" (type butcher) money to design that logo? the "t" and "i" don't go at all with the original typeface and that logo is downright pathetic!

p.s. i dug up the text for my screenshot links:

quote:

256_Colors_9.1

256_Grayscale_9.1
256_GrayedOut_10.1

256_Color_10.1
Thousands_Color_10.1
Thousands_GrayedOut_10.1
Millions_Color_10.1
Millions_GrayedOut_10.1

i forgot to mention that the screenshots were all in color with the exception of the one labeled as grayscale from OS 9.1 check the differences between that image and the ones i grayed out from the color screenshots from 256 level color in 9.1 and 10.1 (the three grouped together).

in case anybody was interested before i dump them off my iDisk!

I played 2 screen Hornet once on my 950: I had three screens on the desk and the 950 had to be on the floor...

I picked up my Portrait Display at a local Value Village for $12.99 CDN a few months ago. Has a tiny crack in the bottom of the case but the image is still crisp. I didn't realize that there were other people out there who loved their portraits!

I have a Radius portrait display (Radius called it a "Full Page display") sitting on the floor beside me but I can't get an image on it with a NUBUS FPD II card and the radius software. Apparently, it is a 640x480 model (model 0362). Does anyone know if I have the right video card?

I'm a portrait fanatic along with being a Radius Lunatic!
Which is why I was able to dig out the March 1993 Radius Product Overview-5! It states that your display is a standard 640x870 Portrait resolution monitor that should run off the Built in video of the Quadras 950/900/800/700 and the Centris (and probably the later Quadra revs) 650/610, the LC III (and probably the later MicroQuadras) and the Powerbooks 180/165c/160 (and probably any later PowerBooks as well), the Duo MiniDock and Dock, as well as the built in video of the IIci and the IIsi in Black and white only. All the other systems listed will work in black and white and with the proper VRAM config they will do 256 level grayscale!

I won't go into any of the cards listed other than to say that the FPDII card is not among them, I have a feeling it only works with the original Portrait in 640x864 at a slightly different frequency, but that's just a guess, when my original FPD arrives, maybe we can do a little horse trading if my hunch is correct!

Thanks for the info on the Radius FPD!

I'm going to give the Radius a try on my IIci and see if I can get the monitor to work. It would be very cool to have the Apple and Radius working side by side. The other thing I like about the portrait display is the abundance of built-in ADB ports (3!). Nothing like being able to plug in a mouse & keyboard, trackball, and graphics tablet

Let me know if you are interested in the FPD card

Ran into a big problem...

The video cable that I have for the Radius monitor has what looks like a VGA connector (3 rows of pins) for the end that plugs into the monitor. The Mac end of the cable looks like a serial connector (2 rows: 5 pins on the top row and 4 pins on the bottom). This matches what I have on the Nubus FPD II card but not a standard Mac video connection.

Does anyone have a cable that they would like to sell, an adapter for the cable that I have, or know of a place that still sells the proprietary Radius cable?

Thanks in advance

Doesn't sound like an insurmountable problem, at least you don't need to deal with the crazy Sun Video type cable. If the monitor takes an HD-15 VGA type cable an adapter should be a simple project if you google the pinouts.

The best place to start looking for info would be Griffin Technology's monitor database. It sounds to me like you have one of the cables for the SE card which uses a DB-9 to bog only knows what on the original FPD. If you can find any pinout conversion at all for that monitor it'll be a start!
