Today has turned into a bad day, and it's only 8AM.

Over the past few months, my Dad has been viewing certain sites that aren't kosher with my Mom. Specificly, ones with Java based chat rooms. My Mom has learned of these sites, and threatned to rip the modem out of the wall if she had proof of his visit to one of these again. Being that she now knows how to check recent history in all browsers we use (NS 6, NS Communicator, IE 5), she has seen numerous instances.

Last night, he did it again. Now I am throughly pissed off because he lost the internet access for all of us, not just himself.

So if you don't see my online much, you now know why you haven't seen me. I will try to be as active as possible in the next 2 weeks, while I can, for a short time, access the web from work. After August 16, my job here ends, and so does the internet access.

At home, I may be able to use the model sporaticly, by connecting it to the back of my system directly (opposed to over the router).

My only idea left is if I can block access to the web (TCP port 80) to one router address (the offending system, 192.168.1.100). I have a Xsence Router, (I forget the model number), and I know I can access most of the router security configurations, but there is no guarantee of having internet back home any time soon.

WHAT????

It was your Dad that went to that site, so why are you also suffering from the consequences? Thats just not fair...

Either way, good luck, and i hope to see you back soon!

I have been progressively installing more and more security measures over the last two weeks. It is to the point, that he can only log onto one system (The G4/450 DP), and watch every move he does, using Apple Remote Desktop. He can't even turn it on without me knowing.

And the reason why I am suffering is because my Mom has no desire to divorce my Dad. They have been married a long time (30 years this Sept.) and she still loves him.

He also still loves her. He sees it as harmless chatting. (I actually observed him last night, and he did nothing. He jumped into a chat room, watched for about 10 min, and then left, never saying a word.) He doesn't see why she is reacting this way.

It's going to be a long night...

oh, by the way. I don't see anything wrong with going into chatrooms. Your mom is just being a bit paranoid about it.

Couldn't you just install a clean-up utility that will erase everywhere he's been? I agree with it being harmless. They've been together for 30 years, so if he was ever apt to do anything, wouldn't have happened by now? I've been married for...jeez, 8 years now. For all the chats I've been to, I've mainly hung out for pointed conversation. Anything else, like dating, teen (no offense), or gossip sites just get ignored. Maybe your Dad needs to invite your Mom to enter one of the chats with him so she'd be more comfortable about the content.

If you're interested in a clean-up utility and you haven't cheated but using something non-Macintosh, , i can send you a copy of Mac-Washer.

Good Luck

I agree, she is getting very paranoid. Recently, my Uncle down in Florida got divorced from my Aunt, after 32 years of marriage. I think she is just afraid of having the same thing happen to her.

Since the cable modem has been ripped out, now one week ago, there have been noticeable changes around the house. Both my Mod and Dad are not talking to each other, and if they are, they blow up in anger at each other.

My brothers have been spending less and less time at home, prefering to be out with their friends. Combined between the 3 of us, we would have been online for at least 6 hours a day each. Since the modem is gone, total time using a computer has been cut to about 15 a day, if that... My brothers are angry at both my parents; my Mom for taking the modem away from us even though we didn't do anything, and against my Dad because he was the cause of this whole mess.

My Mom is still very unhappy. If you act nice to her or even talk to her at all, she will break down crying practicly. She has said that the thinks that removing the modem will kinda repair their marriage back to the way it was 2 years ago, before the modem. Unfortunetly, because of the way my brothers are acting in this, she sees it as she will either lose he husband if she keeps the modem, or loses her sons if she doesn't.

I believe that the majority of the problem here is a lack of communication.

My Mom thinks she is loosing my Dad to someone he met online (which is the same way my Aunt left my Uncle), which is why she wants him not to speak to anyone there. She has told me that she still loves him, but she doesn't know if he is still interested in her after 30 years.

My Dad thinks he is doing nothing wrong talking to someone online. He has told me that he still loves my Mom (and in his exact words, "Marrying Mom was the one thing he has done right in his life"), but he doesn't know how to show it to here without her either accusing him of lying, blowing up at him, or breaking down crying.

Being that neither of them are willing to talk to each other, neither of them know how the other feels.

This week, starting Sat. 5AM, my parents and brothers are going on a trip up to friends in SE New Hampshire. They will be gone for 7 days, and they are leaving me home (I have to got to my 2 jobs). On the plus side, I get the modem back (Yay!). I only hope things get better while they are up there. Only time will tell...

Yes, I could, but the thing is, I side with my Mom on the issue, and disagree on her action.

I agree that my Dad shouldn't be visiting the sites he does (I agree that the chatrooms are harmless), but installing a program going against my Mom, I am afraid that we will lose her if she finds out that her own sons are turning against her.

Besides, my Dad already learned where the history erase button is in IE, NS Communicator, and NS 6. He got caught because he would erase the history traps my Mom put in to check and see if it was gone.

It is easy to set ie so it does not use history, or better yet use chimera it has tabbed browsing and only keeps the bookmakrks for 1 window session.

Good point on the utility. To reiterate what I eluded to before, it's doubtful he'll what to do anything now if he hasn't in 30 years. Communication is the basis of our human existance. If it's not in the chat rooms, it's on the street, at the store, on the phone, etc. The difference is, those are much more personal being face to face or voice to voice. A chat room is like a big party only every voice can be heard or ignored. That and you don't have to smell your buddies bad breath. I still think they should talk about it and have him introduce her in there. After that much time together, the only real thing out of what you've said that could reak him away is taking away the modem. Forcing her way on him is one sure-fire way to aggravate the situation. The only thing you can really do yourself though is gently remind them of how and why the other is feeling the way they do with valid facts. They mainly need to sit down and talk. If it seems too emotional to them to do it in person, then they could write everything down on paper so their thoughts can be plain to see. I've come right out and asked my wife to do it in the past for just that reason. If something is painful to say, pen and paper is the way to go. Once everything is out in the open, calmer conversation can take place. I hope everything goes well.
