I went for a look around a few places to check out computer desks with my mother. 3 shops, and loads of desks later...

...not *one* had a place to put a mouse. y'either had to put it in front of the keyboard with barely any room for the two, or push the monitor back & to the side and use it there - again with barely inches to use. Mad huh.

dana (so we're using an old dining room table)

that IS mad. I thought most comp desks these days had craploads of room for keyboards and mice and that sorta stuff. Or maybe they're putting doctored pictures of desks into those catalogues that arrive in the mail...

Here, apart from the desk that i have the iMac on, all my computer desks have enough room - apart from the stereo speaker that my dying 386 sits on...

You can find all sorts of desks (and other useful items, like file cabinets, good-quality desk chairs, bookcases, etc.) at used office-furniture stores, often at very low prices.

Also, Staples (do they have Staples in Australia, yet?) sells 'banquet tables', in 4', 6', and 8' lengths (by 30" wide) that make great desks (no drawers or hutches, though). They have folding metal legs, and are incredibly sturdy--and cheap (c. US$40 for the 6-footer).

Nope, we don't have Staples here.

That's pretty much what we went for - it's about 4' by 3' (probably a little less than 3' deep) and holds the computer, monitor, keyboard, printer, mousing... and since it's a table that my mother had picked out ages ago, actually goes with the room too. bonus! :D

I looked closely at the harvey norman catalogue - I'm -sure- the two photos are the same desks they had in the shop, which had room for a keyboard, and if it were pushed over to the left there would be about 10cm space on the right of the keyboard for a mouse. In the catalogue, thats exactly where the mouse was placed!.

I -am- in a smallish country city, so perhaps we only get the crap... you'd think harvey's would have something decent though.

Do yourself a favour and go to (real life) auctions. You can get really cheap stuff there if you're willing to do a bit of sanding and lacquering.

Aha, they sure do! There's one in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, and two in Sydney. One of my favorite things to do if you're tight on cash (and/or creatively inclined, which I know you are!) is go to the AS-IS section and find different broken/unattached pieces of various desks/tables and put them together in some new way. For instance, I found a table top from one item and the legs from another and screwed them together in five minutes with a total cost of about US$6.

Yes :). In cities though... not feral lil places like here.

mind, the desk I have now is kinda rough, but works wonders. It's a corner piece, much like you'd find in many offices, about 6 feet one way, 5 feet the other, and a bit over 2 feet deep. It's one of my favourite things -ever-

If I ever replace the pathetic little table in my room that I keep my computers on, I'll get a Bush desk. Bush got good reviews from Consumer Reports, and their desks are big enough for all my stuff.

My g/f and I were having the same problem recently. Mainly because we needed a table big enough for 2 computers+ extras (we figured the other 5 would be ok on the floor :-) ).

Originally we were using a pool table which was absolute murder on the wrists and then we picked up an ancient school desk but there was barely room for the keyboard in front of my 21 inch monitor.

We tried Ikea first which wasn't too bad as long as you're prepared to fork out enough cash (we didn't really want to spend more than 150 AUD ). We then found a pretty good office furniture clearance place, I can't remember the name but it was just behind Crown Casino in the center of Melbourne. You could get some pretty large desks for about 120 AUD.

In the end we found a neat deal in the trading post for 80 AUD. Some guy had filled and plastic coated a large 2.5 meter long door and bought a pair of legs from Ikea for it. It actually looks great, you'd never know it was a door and if I needed another large table I'd make one like this myself. You could always try the same thing yourself, a set of adjustable legs like these wouldn't cost too much and you could get Ikea to deliver them.

WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING COMPUTER DESKS!

Actually, the desk on which my iMac sits has a very interesting story. My grandfather used to be the boss at a large cemetery (which shall remain nameless for privacy reasons). When he retired, he took two desks from his office and refinished them. He gave me one of them. It is an old hardwood desk made by the Jasper Desk Company, a member of the Wood Office Furniture Institute, to quote the label on the inside of the top drawer. It easily accommodates the iMac, a printer, a desk lamp, a mouse, a keyboard, a spindle of CD-Rs, and a gamepad. It has three drawers on one side, a drawer above where a chair slides under it, and a pull-out writing surface.

Screw shelves! Buld your own rack-like devices!

http://torpedobird.com/room.html

Hehe. The middle one is a picture i took a while ago. There are now 5 monitors across there. And i dont have any picks of the machines, or the spaces. But imagine 4 desktop-ish "slots" in a 2x2 config with a tower on each side.

Its amazing what an hour or two and plenty of 2x4's can accomplish....

We've got both ultra-low-end and high-end computer desks. The low-end one is the top off of a small dining room table supported by two 2-drawer filing cabinets at either end (all of it picked up at garage sales). Its not pretty (one filing cabinet is black and the other is "putty" colored), but it does a great job as a home office computer desk.

Now if you haven't spent all your money on 68k's from eBay, then you might look into a custom-build desk. If you have anyone in your locality that makes basic wood furniture (e.g., bookshelves, tables, bed frames, cabinets, etc.) go talk to them. A locally built, custom-made desk can cost less than a "nice" office desk from an official furniture store. I admit that you will pay more than if you buy a cheap-o particle board desk at an office-supply store, but a custom-built desk will be exactly the size, shape, color, and features that you want (just make sure you think VERY carefully about what you want and getting the dimensions right).

BTW, ~Coxy, "BigMac" is very excited to be the 68k of the week!

Door tables are simple and cheap. Get an unfinished hollow door from a home center or lumber yard. Get a couple of used two-drawer file cabinets, or six concrete blocks, and you're all set. Lots of space above and on top.

Here's an older shot of the desk that quadrajets and I built to hold many a Mac. Right now the Macs set up on it are different: my Power Mac 5400, Q800, FeetsMac, LC 475, and my Duo Dock reside in various spots on there.

http://homepage.mac.com/macdaddy_01/desk2.jpg

It is built from mostly 2x4s and other lumber we had laying in the storage shed out back, and the top surfaces are 3'X5' sheets of particleboard with a fake wood finished top, also from the shed. The whole unit is held together with drywall screws, and is an extremely sturdy desk, capable of holding several 68Ks. I gave it a coat of stain to make it look better, and it looks pretty good, though these days it's starting to get beat up a bit.
