What's the best mail server software for 68k? I've got 2 weeks before classes start again and I want to get an email server going. Thanks in advance!

Ok, i answered my own question. You can get eudora's internet mail server software here: http://www.eudora.com/free/servers.html

Apparently it's closely related to AIMS. I don't know that for a fact, just read that somewhere. It's POP, i don't think there are any IMAP apps for 68k. If there are could you please let me know.

I do though have a new question. Ho easy is this for somebody like me with that uses a dynamic name service such as dyndns.org? One of the requirements stated that I needed a domain name. I didn't know if that would substitute.

Has anybody successfully made an email server using EIMS/AIMS and a dynamic ip service???

I'm totally lost in trying to set EIMS up.

ok, this is my own personal thread.

so i finally got the email server working last night around 2 am. I have it working with dyndns.org and on a 68k. here's the setup:

Quadra 950
160 meg ram
3 gig drive
EMIS 1.3.1 (free download)
www.dyndns.org address
Bare-bones OS 8.1

It's a pop3 server and Mail in OSX works perfectly, not that i had any doubt, mail is mail.

As I mentioned in the other thread, if somebody wants to do this and has the problems i did, then email me, i'll help you out.

(I haven't officially changed emails, i'm testing it out right now.)

I'm working on setting up a mail server as well now, unfourtunately, I'm lost, well my test e-mail is anyway. I don't really understand the Eudora thingy although I've only had it for about 15 min. Help let me know what you did!

ok, I'll try to write a little guide for anybody:

!) Have a constant internet connection, canle, dsl, t1, t3 oc3,etc.

2) You will need to setup a host name with some service. I used www.dyndns.org .

3) You must configure your firewall/router to forward ports 25 (smtp) and 110 (pop) to your email server's local ip address. (i'm assuming you will be having one server for both pop3 and smtp.) If you don't forward these ports all incoming mail data will fizzle at the firewall. If you have no firewall, I have heard that some ISPs are blocking certain ports at their servers so you might be out of luck.

4) Install and start up EIMS. I added a alias to my startup items so when I restart, it will just start up automatically.

5) Goto Server in the menu bar and select Preferences and input your host name in the "server names" box and set that to default. So if your host name was yourhostname.dyndns.org, then that would be the default name. Don't add pop or smtp to the beginning.

6) Goto Server again and to account information. You can setup your username which is what would be the _________@yourhostname.dyndns.org. And password, blaa blaaa that's all preference stuff.

7) I've been having a few problems with 10.2 it seems to be causing invalid pop3 streams occasionally, and i'm working on what the problem is. But in a perfect world. This would be your setup with your email client.

You username and password is what you setup.

The servers should be called just the host name. yourhostname.dyndns.org . Don't add the pop or smtp prior to the addresses.

If you seem to have network problems you can set the server in the email client to your server's local address and skip the dyndns lookup. It's probably a wise thing to do. I'm probably going to do that.

I think that's it for the guide if anybody has anything to add or has questions. Post or email me and i'll get back asap. Enjoy!

I used a similar setup using no-ip.com for dns. I'm running eims under classic on a G4 cube. I just use it as an SMTP server, not for POP access yet. 3 months and so far so good. :-)

If i can manage to stay online with a dialup all the time will that work?

i also am using that (foetoid.is-a-geek.com)

Um, i dont have a router or a firewall that i know of, that is, unless my moms PC is acting as one dishing the data out to the switch to the comps. and how would i get this configured to send the pop and smtp to my 950?

EIMS is running now

done, but do i need to have it be foetoid@ foetoid.is-a-geek.com, or can it just be foetoid?

I dont use X so i wont have any problems there, but will i have trouble with using outlook on windoze systems to make more accounts?

sorry, i'm just getting the habit of checking the mla again after a month or so of being insainly busy i missed you post here. I'll try to answer some question:

quote:

If i can manage to stay online with a dialup all the time will that work?

yes

quote:

Without knowing what sodtware you're using or anything i'll just say that you'll have to have open ports or the email won't get through... if you have a friend with osx, have he/she do a port scan using network utility so see if the ports are indeed open.

quote:

done, but do i need to have it be foetoid@ foetoid.is-a-geek.com, or can it just be foetoid?

just the stuff before the @, sorry i didn't make that very clear.

quote:

I dont use X so i wont have any problems there, but will i have trouble with using outlook on windoze systems to make more accounts?

no, you shouldn't have any problems besides typical windows' "operation".

quote:

With dyndns, do i need to use the mail exchange deally?

nope, that deals with stuff way more complicated than this.
