(this isn't so much a response, as a generic rant)
Apples legal team's weaselness is only offset by the generic 'crowd stupidity' who'll shout "ripped off!" when the imac G4 doesn't arrive (july 2001), or "where is our goddamned iWalk/PDA?" in January 2002, or "but you said 10.2 was an upgrade!" this month.

Dang, there's already cries of "Apple are finished, they're not including DDR in the new G4s" based on photos of -development- boards. That bit annoys me, not just presumption of what may come, but judgment before the final product is here. Remember the apple development board that appeared on eBay -with- DDR... and suddenly IRC is full of "The next G4 is out soon and it has DDR!"... and it didn't happen.

I'd rather not apple become another Amiga, where rumours of an A5000 with 100Mhz 68060, video processing onboard that can capture a full hour of television onto a 250mb HD, etc spread around unchallenged for months, and the REAL product ends as a "oh. so what... it's no A5000"... or the inverse, where the new Amiga owners announce every tiny possibility as a press release - and about 10% of it has all come to fruition.

I'm ranting mostly, I suppose, about the solid belief put into rumours. If DDR appears, good, if it doesn't... THEN abuse Apple, or react however you will. The fact that development boards have appeared on rumour sites both with (early this year) and without (just recently) shows you can't make a solid decision either way. Take a rumour site as having just that, -rumours-. Most of us here seem to get it OK - IRC is filled with idjits... and I think that's what apple wishes to quash asap with whatever legal tactics they can - Keeping rope away from the lynchmob. People in crowds are animals.

dana (I might rant a bit more too :)

This may, or may not, be a response to the first two postings, but it is rant (which makes it on-topic, I guess)

I totally understand Apple's secrecy about new products. Unfortunately, people have a natural inclination to wait for the next version and then everyone tries to buy one when it comes out. Its really hard on a company when customer stop buying for a few months and then flood the company with orders. "What, you mean you can't make 250,000 iMacs in the first week??" (Oh, and Apple did try the trick of prebuilding a fat inventory of new models, only to get reamed when demand did not materialize.)

Apple owners are an odd bunch. My favorite is the ongoing insistence by many Mac owners that all software and hardware upgrades should be free. I even remember Mac 128k owners who thought that they had a natural-born right to a free upgrade to the Mac Plus, when that came out. The Cult of Macintosh is quite strange -- do PC owners rant and rave about what the next model PC should look like or that they should get free upgrades forever???

Too few people seem to realize that Apple is a business, not a rich uncle with unlimited financial resources -- everyone wants unlimited support and upgrades in perpetuity. And, too few people realize that a product's price must exceed the cost of the components -- everyone wants every possible whiz-bang feature for a price below that of the lowest-cost bargin-basement PC. I am not saying that Apple hasn't made money off its customers, only that those profits are well deserved and NOT obscene (for obscene profits, go check out the finances of Mordorsoft or Intel).

Apple, its not the greatest company in the world, but its better than the competition and deserves more support and credit than it receives.

Anyway, that's my rant for the week (or day, or hour, we'll see)

i'm not saying apple shouldn't come down hard on whoever breaks their NDA to release this info when it is real info. i just think that empty threats against the rumor sites publishing the photos is incredibly counterproductive in the long term. it's also vicious, petty, contemptible behavior, IMHO.

since apple is a design oriented company, i really think they need to spend more energy on what detroit calls "concept cars." if they put out a half dozen sensible to outlandish prototype leaks every product cycle they could get useful feedback from the web buz for the next cycle and discredit the rumor sites to a great enough extent that the mac public would just wait for the real announcement before deciding about its worth, but that's just my take on the matter.

the biggest problem of all is that an upgrade disabled POS in a sexy box like the cube would still get rave reviews like it did upon its initial release, but bomb in the marketplace because mac buyers yap incessantly about cool design, but buy power and flexibility whenever they are given a choice. the problem it that the turtlenecked martinet likes the lobotomized, pretty-faced, toylike disposables and pushes those on us. has any other recent mac been liquidated at a loss besides the cube? you'd think they would have at least put ONE PCI slot in the eMac, but i guess they just don't get it in cupertino, in the CEO's office anyway . . .

i think we need lots of smoke, mirrors and showmanship as a response to the rumormill, meritless threats are worse than useless, and before long they will be useless, IMHO.

An expansion option is always nice but I still dont see really what you would use a pci slot for in an eMac. 'Course I have NO interest in usb 2 either...

Cyberwolf: He doesnt get it.

according to that article Apple was being really cruel and unfair. Although you kinda have to understand why they'd want security. As said earlier in the thread somebody will see something on a rumor site and want it, but when it never comes availible they won't like it.
