I know, and as soon as he mentioned it was a bit larger than the PS2 screens, and I realized it was transparent I knew it would perfect for a functional, color macquarium.  Now there will be a huge run on 9 inch overhead projector LCDs

tangent time!

<tangential misdirect routine enable>

how about combining the two notions, put the mac on the bottom, a remote controlled camera rig above it and the lamp/projection panel/lens above that with a big thermaostatically controlled fan underneath to expel the heat. all this hardware would be installed under a big glass coffe tabletop in a central well inside a square doughnut macquarium/coffee table.

with the room lights off you could lean back on the couch, prop your feet up on the coffee table and remotely control zoom/pan/tilt/focus of the MacAquariumCam or play games on the LCD image projected onto the ceiling.

you'd probably need to do some kind of double lid arrangement over the water down to the level of the projection system to clear the godaweful heat from the projection bulb over the surface of the tank if you wanted to use it for extended periods, but a big fast direct projection lens should allow a lower output bulb to be usable in a darkened room. an octagonal, hexagonal or rectangular doughnut might be required due to strength and size considerations, but it'd be one hella' cool "little" toy!

</tangential misdirect routine enable>

jt

back with the first realistic mod to make it feasible: you'd need to put the projection lens into a separate tabletop section/box to lift out and rotate 90° into a much higher working position to get the back focus you'll need to have any space left underneath for the camera and mac installation. but you'll be opening a huge airway for the waste heat to be expelled above the surrounding tabletop instead of over the water underneath it and the uneven sides of the lens carrier/top spacer/sides could act as a gutter in the lower position so no cool-aid ends up in the electronics well or tank when the kids get rambunctious. <rolleyes>

the waste light from the projection lens/condensor system could be utilized indirectly for the TankCamVideo with angled/shuttered white reflectors and UV filtering around the periphery of the LCD image.

i guess just posting the piccies doesn't quite get the concept across either! <sighs> i knocked out a rough plan in illustrator because blackstealth said he had to read it three times to figure out WTF i was describing. <shrugs> it'd probably be a 630 IRL but when i was doing the sketch i decided to troll for some eeeee's, eeeeeeek's or maniacal squeeeeeks! so i threw in a <whisper> m-i-c-r-o-q-u-a-d-r-a-!</whisper>

I'm currently collecting drives to build a 3 stripe, 21 drive MAID. SCSI cards are pretty rare around here, so I won't go into a 49 drive monster.

Trash: I think thelip meant what is the picture showing. I'm a bit confused myself. You offered the discussion below, but I got a little lost.
~Coxy: 21 drives, eh? The way I understand it, each disk contains the same information, in the same place, so requests can be directed to a drive that's less busy, increasing throughput? That's how I took it. So, you're serving something to so many people that you'll need 21 disks to handle everyone?? Whoa! Um, what is it? Or did I just misinterpret the concept? Hmm, I just looked at it again, and I think maybe I have another take on it. Will this be for your own personal use, and it will just be really fast? That doesn't quite seem to make sense, though, because one person can only do so many things with so many drives. Are you going to be copying and reading so many things at once that you'll need 21 drives to do it efficiently? Please, shed some light on this one

Did you read the MAID page?
The whole point is that you can show off your numerically insane drive system, who cares about throughput!

Oh...then that's ridiculous! I didn't think the page was too serious when it was talking about bragging. Heh, so, how much is this crazy project going to run you up? 21 drives will not be cheap, plus the PSU's

Quite a bit, SCSI drives ain't cheap around here.
As you know, I've got 6 drives in there now, and a few more lying around. As soon as I get 14 I'll fill up the internal rack.

i figured that, i was being flip, check out the link to the fritter thread for the background, it's basically a use for the projection panel somebody has over there. other than that i thought the graphic was fairly self-explanatory, where'd you get lost?

*scratches head* umm I'm not sure whether to take this seriously or not.....
I just worked out that the thing is a Mac Aqua Kluge - I was reading it as Mac Aqua Luge, and dang it that grey thingy in the top half of the picture looks like it's got wheels! Its a Q605 of course, but it look like the feets is changed to wheels LOL!

I got lost at the lens assembly - fresnel condensor seems like an oxymoron to me, plus where the hell is that camera pointing??

I confused
