Hello All! I'm sorry to be a bother (I know I am, but I'm improving!) I'd appreciate any help and patience.I think I'm making a little progress. For my Mac Classic, Onto two 1.4 Meg floppies I downloaded: 1) sys 6.0.8 2) system additions I ran the installer and it made me a system folder disk I would like to erase my hardrive and start over with a fresh install of 6.0.8 I don't really know how to do this. I tried erasing the hard drive but it won't let me (probably for some very good reason, like I don't know what the heck I'm doing). I also read the installation readme file, where it mentioned to erase all virus protection programs first. When I boot the system, I see a little V in the bottom left hand corner (I think it's an old MacAfee program, but I can't find it to delete it) I'm not sure where to start? Can anyone help, please? Thank you and spyswitch00 |

You have to be booted from a floppy disk to format your drive. Stick in the install disk before you boot the machine. It will then boot from the floppy, and HD SC Setup should run OK.As for the icons at the bottom of the screen when it boots, those are system extensions. To get rid of them, drag them out of the system folder, or out of the "Extensions" folder inside the system folder, if you have System 7. Hey Oldmacman! Thanks!! got rid of the dreaded, "V" just like you said: I tossed the extension into the trashcan and it wiped it out. I went ahead and booted with the "systems disk" floppy inserted in the drive, but it just spit it out. I then went to the HD setup to try and initialize (reformat?) the HD, and got the following message: "The disk could not be initialized. Unable to unmount drive. A file on the disk may still be in use" I'm assuming that the system didn't get to load off the system floppy, and that it's using the HD to boot the system therefore I can't erase from something I'm inside of already? In the event that I booted from the wrong disk I tried this again from the "systems folder" floppy that the 6.0.8 system installation program created, but it spit it out of the drive as well. Any ideas what's taking place? I hope I'm being clear. thanks sypswitch00

try holding the "C" key down when you're starting up with the system disk in, I honestly can't remember if that works on compact macs or not, worth trying._______________________ Sgt.
