Hi everyone, new to the forums, but checking out the hl server and I'm glad I stumbled across this place!

Started with an Apple IIGS (lemonade stand!), and moved on to 68k macs ~9 years ago. Sad state of affairs though, since some good stuff ain't working. Can't say that I've liberated any machines, more like collected from recycle/garbage dumps.

Apple IIGS, Pb 100, Pb 170, Pb 180c (screen cable and casing busted), LC 475 w/ 040, Q 650 (dead power supply)

4 years ago my Q650 quit, and I switched over to the pc world (omg).
Well lately I've been trying to get back into the scene as
1. school's out
2. a good friend gave me an lc 475
3. i came into a bunch of scsi disks
4. i got real cheap 16mb ram sticks

Right now using the LC 475 but want to resurrect the Q650 for more ram capacity. The story goes that one day I was using the machine, then it turned off. Couldn't turn back on. After disconnecting the hd and floppy, it turned back on after a lot of false starts. plugging back in the floppy and it turned on, but would die after inserting a disk. i think the power supply got progressively 'weaker'.
Well, I've been trying to replace it with various pc power supplies, both at and atx with no luck. Can this be done?

Btw, better to run 7.5.5 or 7.6.1? and if 7.6.1, where to dl? i couldn't get the image to mount from 68k.torpedobird.com hl server...

Thanks for everything

Welcome to the MLA!!

i think you'll have to replace the psu with something from a similar model, like a centris 650 or the the quadra 650 (were the IIvx or IIvi close enough???). We, here, swear by ebay.

There could be a chance that the pram battery might be dying and causing some problems, although I don't think your problems are related, you can try to zap it. command+option+p+r when you start it up. see if that has any affect (effect?!). Depending on how much ram you have, I like running OS8 on my q650 with 44 meg of ram. Stick with 7.6.1 if OS8 isn't your cup of tea.

Firstly, i would also like to welcome you to the 68k Macintosh Liberation Army.

Secondly, you can steal a power supply from the following machines:

Macintosh IIvx
Macintosh IIvi
Macintosh Centris 650
Macintosh Quadra 650
Power Macintosh 7100

Either way, good luck. Centris 650s ROCK!

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, but have you made sure the power cable isn't loose?

Ha, ya I checked and the power cables are fine :)

The battery is ok too.

Is the power supply on Q650 'special' in some way? Since when I hook up the pc power supply and turn everything on, the fan in the pc power supply doesn't spin. But then disconnect it and the fan spins again..

Huh? You're using a generic PC power supply? And the fan spins only when disconnected?

While trying to swap in a pc power supply:
normally the fan in the pc psu spins when the unit is on.
when the pc psu is disconnected from everything (but plugged in) the fan spins.

when i connect the pc psu to the quadra's m/b, and turn it on, the fan in the pc psu doesn't spin. same behaviour whether i'm trying an at or atx psu. also same thing when i tried a centris 610 psu.Go to Top of Page

When that behaivor arises from a PC power supply, it is telling you that it does not like what it is being plugged into, and thinks there is a short circut. Check the colours of the cables on the 650 PSU and make sure they match the PC PSU (unless apple thought different in this matter, and used nonstandard pinouts). I know that it is hard to see the colours on a 650, but it is possible if you look carefully (unless my 650 is ass-backwards from the world, or the previous owner did some modding)

YIKES!

My profession has been mostly as a career power supply design engineering technician (25 years). DO NOT PLUG A PC POWER SUPPLY INTO YOUR MAC MOBO, EVER!!

Sorry, but the connections may match >physically<, but electrically, the wires can be arranged in any fashion the designers want... if the PC supply puts +12 where the mac wants -5, poof! Dead mobo, 99.99999% of the time. After doing that, you could plug in a brand new power supply and because the PC supply fried the mobo, the brand new supply will still not make the system work.

I'm sorry I came in late on this, I bet you haven't posted because you already decided the system was toast.

Linux is my choice. Mac was my guide. M$ is not my friend.Go to Top of Page

If you need a Q650 mobo, lemme know. I have a Q800 (same board as the 650, except for the speaker wire jack) you can have to play with. Right now it's in a transplanted Q700 case (yes, that project worked), but I plan to strip it and part it out. I couldn't think of anything cool to do with the computer once it was done.:-(

I think there are 2 ram simms on the board, but I forget the size.

You could have it for like $10 plus shipping, as could anyone else who needs it. I also have a good power supply (q700) that is available.
