There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

Not at all possible. The minimum system is some flavor of OS 9. The DP 800 I use at work came with 9.2.1. Usually, Apple ships machines with the minimum OS required, so the OS is compatible with updated firmware (and other misc hardware updates) on the newer machines.

Besides, you would lose the functionality of the second processor, as 7.6 is not DP aware.

OS X is the best os to run on DP machines.

VMac (www.vmac.org) is now carbonised and should allow you to run up to OS 7.5.5 on a G4.

Cheers!

Well, if you're going to resort to emulation.

There is a port of Basilisk II to Mac OS X. I don't know how it would run on a G4 dual 800, but it runs really slowly on my 500 MHZ G3 iMac.

Yep! just confirmed it works... well, under OS X on a G3 anyway. It boots into system 6.0.8 or 7.0.1 (the 2 disk images I have handy) in just a few seconds.

As itsemulating a mac plus it should be able to run up to 7.5.5. I'll try to put up some screen shots later today.

Cheers!
