On my Performa 400 I have word processing software. This is mainly why I bought the computer.

How can I transfer the contents of my 80 meg drive over to my Quadra 840av?

I have tried putting the drive in the Quadra but this hasnt worked(the Quadra keeps trying to "boot" from the drive.)

I was tempted to try sneakernet but In have now found that the Performa is destroying floppy disks. I think this is mechanical & prey that it's not Viral.

I considered emailing the software to myself but the Performa isnt ready for internet.

My last try is to network the two computers. I have a serial cable(used from mac to printer)

I guess I'd better read about how to network.

I hope it dosnt mess my settings up.

The problem with putting the Performa's hard drive in the Quadra is that because it's an older, Apple-OEM drive, it probably doesn't have any jumpers to set the SCSI ID, therefore it's stuck at 0. So, the Quadra tries to boot from it, but it probably has too old a copy of the System software to boot it.

So, it looks like your best solution is netwokring. Fortunately, this is very easy on a Mac.

Just take that serial cable that you use to connect a printer and run it from the printer port on the Performa 400 to the printer port on the Quadra 840av. Now, boot both machines up. Go onto one of the machines and go under the Apple menu, into Control Panel and open AppleTalk. Set it to the printer port, and close the window. It'll probably take a little while to open the port, then it'll close. Now, go back under Apple, into control panel and open File Sharing. Setup your computer name and password (if you want one) and hit "start" next to file sharing. Do the same thing on the other machine.

Finally, go under the Apple menu and into chooser on the Quadra, and click on AppleShare. You should see whatever name you set the Performa 400 to be pop up on the menu, click on it and hit OK and it will prompt you for your username/password (if any) and ask you what drive you want to mount. You select the drive, and in a few seconds it should mount right on the Quadra 840av's desktop. You can then copy anything off it like you would an internal hard drive (only it will be running at about 0.9MBps, AppleTalk is dreadfully slow).

ok

I DID IT!

Setting up a network with two macs is easy & a pleasant experience.

I was a complete technophobe about it, & reading MacFormat wasnt the best help,

Cinemafia's guide was perfect!

Cheers

It's a little late now, but there are a couple other things you could have tried. This is of course assuming that both HD's don't have the same SCSI ID.

With both HD's in the Quadra you could have tried booting it from a floppy.

Also, you could have held down command(Apple)-option-shift-delete on startup to bypass the default startup disk. This would have prevented the Quadra from attempting to startup from the 80 MB disk.

Networking, although localtalk is miserable for large amounts of data, is the cleanest way.

Yeh

I tried booting from a floppy but this didn't help as I only would have 1 hard drive available.

As for keyboard shortcuts, they just don't stay in my memory, it is very bad news for me as I have swapped from ST,PC,Fontwriter & Apple Mac, all having thier own little magic button presses.

Now I do need to know where the option key is, but I can't remember why at the moment but some prog or the other was asking me to utilise the option key whereever that may be.
