Unfortunately the end result is pretty much: It Won't Work. Almost any other FPU-less CPU will run fine with an OS that requires one, but with the LC040 and their lovely little bug... it's one of the ones that won't. Not usefully anyhows. You may know these techy details, but the short answer on why is that for FPU emulation to work, the CPU must be able to generate a trap when FPU instructions are called, which can then allow an OS to call other routines for handling FPU calls... practically all LC040s used in macs don't work properly in this area. There's a neat little NetBSD page with all the info about this you'd need at: http://www.macbsd.com/macbsd/LC040-and-BSD.html just about all of that applies to Linux too. Of course as was suggested to me, if you manage to get the CPU daughtercard from a 550c... it may be worth trying! dana

Or rip out the original 68LC040 and solder a 68040 in its place, like I did. Works a charm. You'll need: - A very sharp knife - A very fine-tipped soldering iron - An MC68040FE33V (or MC68040FE40V if you plan to overclock while you're at it) - A very steady hand. Then proceed as follows: 1. Open your PowerBook and take out the CPU daughtercard. 2. Using the sharp knife, remove the old CPU from the card. 3. Using the soldering iron, remove the remaining leads of the 68LC040, and clean up the solder pads. 4. Using the soldering iron, solder the new CPU in place. 5. Reinstall the daughtercard, put the PowerBook back together, and test the machine. 6. If everything works, install NetBSD. Happy computing! ,xtG .tsooJ -- RTFM |

my gods...Alien, that's insane! you must be handy with a soldering iron... I also suggest use of a good heatsink when soldering.. pulls heat from the chip, where it might damage. ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Admin of The WonderLAN ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

Thanks for all the help You guys rockI decide against the soldering idea, I took Art Metals in college, but have yet to master the Soldering Iron in the way Alien obviously has. I've decide to go back and install System 7.5.3 Is that the best thing to run on a 540c? should I be running 8 or 8.6? Any other suggestion on how to get the most out of this old Laptop would be much appreciated.
Thanks again

As it is being a 68k, 8.1 is as high as it'll do - though there are PPC upgrades, I can't for the life of me remember if they let you go to 8.6... In any case, 7.5.3 sounds a good all-round OS, it's the one I use on my 540c :D. 7.1.1 is apparently the lowest you can use on one according to http://www.everymac.com/ - but y'd have to find a copy of it as it's not one of the apple-downloadable ones. What's the main use you'd be putting it to? dana

I'd like to get it on a LAN with a Windows 2000 Server.I downloaded MpegDec and got MP3s to play on it, which is sweet, but I'd like to do a little web surfing and and email on it. I've got a Twisted Pair Tranceiver so technically I'm connected, but I'm still trying to get MacTCP configured correctly. once again, thanks for all the help Jake

While I have not tried this with Windows 2000 server, I have tried it with Windows 2000 Professional. For the Dial-up connection, go into the properties page for it. I think the last tab allows you to share the connection. Sharing the connection changes the IP address on the Win2k box to 192.168.0.1. On the Mac side (I'm using my 9500/200 as a reference), you would set the gateway to 192.168.0.1. Next, either use DHCP or specify an address of 192.168.0.x, where x is between 2 and 255. You may need to specify DNS addresses too. On 8.1 and below I have had to in order to get it to work. ---------------- Under the hat...

I seem to recall that from 7.5.3 you can go up to 7.6.1 with a free download from Apple. At least I think that's what we did with the Performa 5215. /Mr Lynn Curator of: SE (6.0.4), SE w. 020 accelerator (6.0.8), SE w. no HD, IIfx (7.1), IIci (bad HD); plus various PPCs in family (blue G3/350 is main Mac these days). |

7.6.1 isn't free, but I think that a disk image for it is on the 68kMLA hotline server and mirror.Official 68kMLA Music and NeXT Expert OpenStep Page at http://openstep.topcities.com/ Macs Liberated: SE (2), IIsi, Quadra 700, 6100, PB 5300, PowerMac 5400/200, Performa 6400/180 PCs liberated from Windoze: 3 |

7.6 is listed at gambahttp://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/syslist.html However, the link has a strikethrough. I don't know if the 7.6.1 that is listed is for only 7.6, or other earlier releases. Try that { candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } |

<bump>*wonders if process sounds more insane than . . .* *thinks: WTF! posts anyway. * Whatcha think of this process? chucking a teensy-weensy tipped soldering iron into a drill press . . . lengthening lever with a spring loaded arm for tight Z axis control . . . mounting a CPU daughtercard to a board as a jig . . . using spring mounting setup for stress relief . . . clamping jig in a milling vise for controlling movement on X & Y axes . . . macrofocusing VidCam on solder joint for ultra-closeup . . . placing monitor setup for ultracloseup view behind setup on drill press . . . placing BIG@$$ magnifying glass in front the setup for rough view . . . soldering 3.5 bazillion legs of an SMT 040 onto CPU card. =8-} jt ™.
