My sister is starting college next year, and I'm thinking of buying her a Newton 2100 that she could use as a laptop, just word processing and basic web browsing/email. I could get one for less than $200, with a modem and a carrying case. Will she be able to print from it directly, or will she need to transfer her notes to a mac first? Is this a good idea, or should I spend a little more for a used 1400/3400?

I would go for the Laptop, just because it makes things a little more easier, less likely to loose, and its College, you need something SUPER durable

Although I'm a newton nazi, i agree with Ti. I wrote up a big huge long list of pros and cons and decided to keep it simple.

newton = small, simplistic, slower than a 1400/3400, limited space and functions.

laptop = more compatible, heavy, color screen, cdrom, keyboard. more storage.

If you want her to be able to do word processing, she'll also need a Newton keyboard. It's also useful for Web browsing.

She can print directly to some serial printers, or over a network to AppleTalk laserwriters.

I'd suggest getting an Ethernet card. She should have no problem connecting it to the campus network (something I'm assumeing exists).

As I've said before, I don't use a laptop at all, just the Newton.

Some people can do this... others can't. I'd talk to HER abhout what she wants and needs.
