some of you may have heard about my project to make a mobile out of a Mac Plus' innards. If you haven't.. well.. you just did. The trick is, the system needs to still WORK, and will be running Darkside of the Mac. so.. I'm askig the people here for suggestions: What do I use as the support rods for hanging the equipment? I had thought about useing peices of lead pipe from the hardware store... ~Marchie ~~"We are all Mad here."~~ |

you'll have to excuse TiMacLover. Most of his posts are incoherent or aren't relevant

marchieif you like the industrial look, scrounge around for some, er, I think they call them I bars. they're the round, kind of corragated bars that get embedded in concrete. look around construction sites and the dump. or, I suppose you could get new ones at a contractors supply. also you might find some very long bolts, I've seen ones over 3 ft. long. but if you want pipe, regular 1/4 - 1/2 inch conduit pipe would be strong enough. and if weight's a factor, pvc pipe is ok too. are you going for movement, or just want it to hang stationary, if the latter, one of those grid things for hanging utensils might work too. excellent idea, btw. I make the odd mobile now and then myself. when you're done post pics! sosumi 68k macs liberated:3 |

The ones that sosumi is referring to are Rubar. It's pretty common in the construction of roadway bridges too.It would probably be easier to pick up a small piece of metal pr plastic plumbing and saw off what you need. Re-Bars. as in, Concrete Reinforcement Bars. Not a bad Idea... I have 2 that are about 20 feet long in the garage... but they are all rusty, and bent into giant horseshoes. The grid thing is comething I had NOT thought of... A metal grid... ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie 68k Macintosh Liberation Army ~~"We are all Mad here."~~ |

re bars... yeah, the name was somewhere in that dark maze I call a mind, must of been thinking of I- beamsanyway, a steel brush attacment on a power drill will take the rust off, leaving an interesting patina. cutting down to size is an issue, I know a hack saw will do it, but it will take a while. here's another thought, suspend the pieces individually with some interesting chain. some of the coated stuff comes in various colors, you can get it in smaller lengths at a place like home depot. or... check out a wrought iron frabication shop, they might be willing to part with scraps for short money. personally, I like to scrounge for materials, but I'm just a bin diver at heart. sosumi 68k macs liberated:3 |
