Millions of thanks!OK: 1) I first make sure that 7.0.? system disks work on my Mac. 2) I then erase my entire Hard disk. 3) I install the system 7.0.? disks 4) I install the Microsoft Word disks (this will allow a text exchange with my PC) 5) Install After Dark Is there anything I left out? Is this pretty much how the Mac used to come out of the box? I love this site by the way, you people are so kind. I would love to give back somehow! 1) Sys 7.0.? (to accomodate a modem program) 2) Microsoft word 4 3 After Dark

Spyswitch00It seems that you clicked on "Post New Topic" several times instead of "Reply To Topic". I know, they're both right next to each other and can get confusing. I'll let it slide ...but please try better next time! -------------------- keeper of the website , master of the Quadra/Centris Stick of Justice™, and figure-head of the Peoples' PDS Republic -------------------- |

How much RAM does the Classic have? Unless you have 4 MB or more, you're better off sticking with System 6. See About This Macintosh in the Apple menu. You don't really need After Dark unless you leave your system on all of the time. For exchanging files with PCs, you'll need Apple File Exchange to read and write PC floppies. See http://macinfo.its.queensu.ca/Mark/formats/AFE.html for where to find it. It's on your system disks. All kinds of classic Mac programs are available for download at http://vieuxmac.com/download/applications/ including MacWrite, Word, and Excel. Once you've got it up and running, be sure to head over to http://mac.the-underdogs.org/ and pick up Shufflepuck Cafe and Crystal Quest. They're great games that run well on compact Macs. For lots of classic Mac stuff, including how to get your System 6 Mac on the Internet, see http://www.jagshouse.com/ Good Luck! Hey, Thanks for the reply.I have a Mac 4096 sys with 7.1. But like you said, I'll wipe it out and start over with sys 6 if it will run a little cleaner (faster) A buddy of mine has a Mac hooked up to the web so I can just take over a stack of floppies and download the items you mentioned. Once I have the sys disks tested out: all I have to do is: "Erase disk" ?

Hey Catdorule! Thanks. Your response was very kind. I may take you up on your offer if I'm having trouble finding it some of that software! I may just forgo the whole internet thing since I use a PC for that already. I don't mind the PC crashing anymore since they're known for that! Again my goal for the Mac is mainly to keep it stock (with what it would come with out of the box) And if system 6.0.8 is less cluttered an d a little faster, I just may go that route like you recommended. Since I'm starting over and want to wipe out (and thus defragment) the hard drive: I just erase the Hard disk? Sounds a little scarry ;I'm a wimp, I know? Thanks for your input.

Erasing a hard drive is not that bad I have done it before just do it while you are booted from the disk and you should have no problems. Yes go with System 6 if you don't want internet but if you do you need 7.-Danny ----- TCP/IP server : 216.130.83.218 L: 68kmla p:68000 Http Server URL: Http://homepage.mac.com/catsdorule/ (Web access to manuals) FTP Server: ftp://216.130.83.218/Library/WebServer/documents l/p 68kmla/68000 |

Thanks Danny! This is going to sound like a stupid question (mine usually are): If I'm booted from the sys 6 disks, and I've erased the hard drive. Is there an "install" type of feature of the sys disks like in windoze (that's the environment I'm coming from)Or do I just "copy" the sys disks onto the hard drive ? thanks

Couldn't have said it better myself. But I will add one thing, chose custom install and Chose the Normal Install for your Model, usually model specific installs have fewer problems. -Danny ----- TCP/IP server : 216.130.83.218 L: 68kmla p:68000 Http Server URL: Http://homepage.mac.com/catsdorule/ (Web access to manuals) FTP Server: ftp://216.130.83.218/Library/WebServer/documents l/p 68kmla/68000 Edited by - catsdorule on 17 Jul 2002 14:06:53 |

Good day Gentlemen. In the interest of bringing those up to speed, I realize I'm repeating myself at the cost of being a pain, but I'd rather have you read one of my messages insteead of going through countless pages! Well, I'm off to Kinkos to download the software I need to get my Mac Classic running (I can't do from my PC) and just want to make sure I have all my bases covered. I checked out the Apple site and as per your advice, I'm going to download the system 6.0.8 disk. I realized however, that there are about a billion things to download, like fonts and what not. Do the system disks have your basic Mac desktop on it, or do I have to go and download the Calander, puzzle, etc? Aside from the sys disks, I'm not sure what I need to get the system up and running (I anticipate more than one trip to Kinkos. However, I would like to limit the amount of time spent there). I couldn't find any word processore software at that site though, and was wondering where else I could find. 1) A word processor that has text exchange with a PC 2) After Dark Some of you are very kind in offering some things to get my system up and running. I don't want to trouble you for them if I can download them off a site. Thanks again!
