Hello all, I'm back (this may not be good news for some)

Well, I decided to go ahead and take some of your advice and just wipe out the HD, defragament the disc and start over -again, I got the Mac Classic on Ebay and have no idea what's garbage and what it isn't.

I mentioned that this may be overkill and the consensus said that it was probably a good idea to start over(I occasionally get a "bomb" type symbol with a "find file" error message during start-up).

So, I take it that the first thing I need to do is download some stuff:
1) A system rescue package (or something like that)
2) some sort of defragmentation program
3) a basic WP program (for sharing basic text between Mac and PC
4) possible some sort of internet text based e-mail program.

I'm really not planning on using it for much more that that.
Can I get some advice on what I need and where to find it?

Thank you kindly.

Actually, if you erase the disk, it will be defragged, so you don't need the defrag program. And, before you totally wipe things, make sure that you can actually boot from whatever rescue package/ system intall disk that you manage to find.

Good luck, a fresh start is always nice,

Oh.....good point. I didn't realize that erasing the HD would defragment it (I get it!).

Where can I go to find the system boot files that I need? I'm looking at essentially getting the best bang for my unspent buck (if that makes sense)if there is stuff out there on abandonware. But, I have to I'll pay for a decent software upgrade. Any ideas on where I should start?

Thanks!

If you're into Hotline, you can use the 68k MLA server (68k.torpedobird.com) or mirror server (68k.dyndns.org) to download System 7 images. Otherwise, you can go to Apple's software archive and get older System 7.x's here, but keep in mind it takes a while to scroll down the page and find all the components. Last, but not least, you can very easily get the original System software for the Classic, version 6.0.8L, here (it's the last one at the right if you scroll over).

System 6 is great for pure nostalgia value, if nothing else. And, best of all, you can run it off of a signle 800k floppy!

With disks as small as 20 -40 megs they are pretty easy to backup buying nu is just not efficient.

If you boot from ROM, can you copy that System to the internal hard drive? I've never tried, meself.
The failsafe ROM boot key sequence is Command (Apple) + Option + X + O.
