I recently aqcuired an asante ethernet adapter for my trusty q700, and it does work to connect to the network and swap files. However, I cannot seem to get it to recognize my cable modem. The cable modem is connected to a lynksis 4 port hub/router, which is in turn connected to a netgear 4 port hub, which is connected to my q700. Other computers running of the same hub work, so I believe its a software thing. Anyway, the 700 has 20 megs of ram but only a 40 meg drive. All help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
mark

Well...

After writing out a long description of decent ideas, i cam eo to realize that you didn't list the system that your q700 is running. It's makes a difference on what system it is.

P.s. I'm guessing it's closer to system 7 than os8, since it's only a 40 meg drive.

Have you called your cable company and given them the Q700's Mac Address or ethernet address? If not your machine will not be allowed to get an IP.

vanman has a router, so the Q700 would get and IP from the router (assuming that DHCP is set up correctly). The cable company would have to have the MAC of the router, so the router gets an IP.

OS 8 is definitely the better option for using TCP/IP, though it's not necessary.

If you are at just system 7.5 you need to upgrade to 7.5.3 first, you need to download these 19 parts: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/
transfer them via networking or floppies to the comp.
Then you download 7.5.5 from here: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/System_7.5.5_Update/ and transfer the "net install" to your other comp. and run that.
