I got a call from my mom's co-worker today. He asked if I wanted any Macs, and of course I said yes. Half an hour later, he brought over two Macs in U-Haul boxes. He told me he was moving and he wanted to get rid of them; I got both for free. Both Macs were dusty and quite yellowed. One was a Mac SE with a 20 MB hard drive, a SuperDrive, a cool-looking dust cover, and 1 MB RAM. The other was my best liberation yet: a Performa 6400/180 with 32 MB RAM, a 1.5 GB hard drive, the stock ADB keyboard and mouse, and an Apple 15av monitor. The SE is now running System 6.0.8. It is now my dedicated Star Wars/Crystal Quest machine. I upgraded the RAM in the Performa to 136 MB with DRAM I already had, I added a 256K L2 cache that I already had, and I removed the GeoPort modem.

I have several questions regarding the Performa.

1) What kind of PCI video card would work well with the classic Mac OS and Linux?

2) Are the 5400 and 6400 logicboards compatible? I have a 5400/200, and I would like to transplant its logic board into the 6400 so it would run faster. Could I just take the 5400 logicboard, attach the 6400 logicboard's backplane, and put it in the 6400?

3) I would like to partition the drive so it has a small Mac partition and about a GB for Linux. When I try to boot off of my OS 8 CD (not 8.1), I get a bomb when the extensions should be loading. The CD boots fine with extensions disabled. Is it OK to use Drive Setup and the OS installer on the CD while booted with extensions off?

Sorry if this doesn't exactly fit the 68K Conquests forum, but I got two great machines for nothing!

dunno, but if the Voodoo3(i think that's the one?) works in Linux, it'd probably be a great all around game and desktop card. if you're only using a 15" monitor, why would you need more than the 1024 x 768 on the mobo?

should be almost the same mobo AFAIK, i'm surprised it's clocked any faster than the 6360/6400 board, that's not a 50MHz board is it? if it isn't, i'd be surprised if you noticed much difference. leave them where they are and watch for a cheap Crescendo L2 G3 card for it on eBay and leave the 200 in the 5400!

I got OS 8 to install. It turns out that there was an issue with having AppleTalk off and booting from the original Mac OS 8 CDs.

The only reason I want a new video card is the color depth of motherboard video. I can't get thousands of colors in anything above 640x480 without flickering. 256 colors is fine for playing Marathon and composing with Finale, but WindowMaker (in Linux) complains a bunch if it can't allocate enough colors. When I ran it in 256 colors on the 5400, it looked really crappy.

It's not a 50 MHz board in the 5400. I just wanted the extra 10% speed increase, since I don't use the 5400 for much anymore.
