Thanks to djm on AAF, I came across this website run by San Diego based experiemental electronic record label, Bremsstrahlung. "Lowercase Sound" is the new term for music that takes minute and subtle real-world noises and amplifies/edits them in a digital environment to produce works of sci-fi/atmospheric dimension, and was first thought up by L.A. electronic artist, Steve Roden.

The genre is almost entirely dominated by Mac-users, most of whom are Japaenese (most likely because it's such a Zen-like trope). Thus, one immediately will find the website to look just like System 6 on a compact, black-and-white Mac! Of course, other websites have used similar design ethics, such as Jag's House, but this site IMHO truly takes the cake for the best iteration of the design. Go ahead, try it out...!

Yeah, I heard some of this a little while back- I think it was featured on slashdot a few weeks ago...
Pretty interesting. The one track I remember was the sounds of a teapot heating and cooling, repeated and amped.... made for some strange beats!
Anyone know what software you'd use to do something like this?

I haven't had a chance to check the link but you might want to try out cellsynth. It's an excellent little program for experimenting with sound and it's only a 4 meg or so download.

You have to try it out to understand really. It's easy to get the hang of. It's all drag and drop and you can do some cool stuff when you hook it up to a giant pair of speakers and mess around with the low frequency sounds. You can make all sorts of cool "organic" soundscapes and the presets cover all sorts sci-fi space scenes and ambient soundscapes.

It's here at www.cellsynth.co.uk

If you like industrial music you should check out Noisex and Converter, although they are ::very:: industrial.

Also weren't half the sounds in Myst made by banging a spanner in a toilet bowl? :)

Hey, thanks for the tips! I'll check out those programs tomorrow, when I'm on the school's T3...
