No My Quadra is fairly safe, but here is the problem;I have a Quadra with the specs listed in my sig. I am intending to instal a 4.23 gig hard drive. I will be swapping this with my 500 meg hard drive. But when I looked today I only had 500 meg on my 1.2 gig drive and more than that on my 500 meg drive. How can I swap the drive which my quadra uses to boot up? I will go & investigate more, but help with formatting will be needed. shaktiman Quadra 840av 84meg ram 2meg vram cd drive(caddy),1 caddy!:-) 1.44 floppy drive, inject :-( 1.2 gig drive 500 meg drive Compaq 15" monitor os 8.1 56k modem Stylewriter 1200 printer Zodiac speakers Umax 1220s scanner 3 year old son! |

Which drive is it booting from right now, the 500MB? Anyway, what you do is remove the drive that's not being used to boot from and replace it with the 4.23GB drive. Boot up, and copy everything from the boot drive to the new 4.23GB drive (just drag the boot disk's icon onto the new disk's icon). This will probably take a while. Once it's finished, shut the 840 down and remove the old boot drive and put the 1.2GB in its place. Now, you should be all set. Just remmember to jumper the new drive first! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

It appears that my "machdd" drive which I though was 500 meg & my boot drive is instead my 1.2 gig drive but it is my boot drive so I will just remove my 500 meg and replace it with my 4.23 gig.shaktiman Quadra 840av 84meg ram 2meg vram cd drive(caddy),1 caddy!:-) 1.44 floppy drive, inject :-( 1.2 gig drive 500 meg drive Compaq 15" monitor os 8.1 56k modem Stylewriter 1200 printer Zodiac speakers Umax 1220s scanner 3 year old son! |

Oh I see, so the 1.2GB is your boot drive? That makes it easy, then, just pop out the 500MB and put the 4.23GB in its place. You shouldn't need to do anything else, assuming the drive is already Mac format, has a unique SCSI ID, and auto-mounts at startup.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

<caveat autoposting mode> make sure that the drive you are removing was, in fact, an unterminated HDD with an ID higher than O attached in the middle position on the cable or determine that it was the original drive set as SCSI ID 0 and with the terminators on it. then set up the new drive appropriately. either drive could have been designated the boot drive in the startup device control panel. i could assume that you meant that the 1.2 was set up on the end of the chain/cable, in the terminated SCSI Device 0 default boot config. of a stock mac internal HDD. but my caveat autoposting routines will not permit me to pass up this opportunity to be annoying! </caveat autoposting mode> jt ™.
