If anyone here plays an instrument, I thought it might be cool to have a 68k Mac Jam Session. Since I play guitar and bass (and french horn and mellophone, but those don't do jazz very well), I could record a blues in Bb or something and each of us could take solos. I could do the drums with Virtual Drummer (for the 68k Mac of course). I'd put it up as an MP3 so each of you could download it, record a solo on top of a couple choruses of it, and upload the file back, complete with your solo.

What do you think?

I play acoustic guitar...but I'm not that good...just hack along every once in a while.

I can play the rythm [sp?] to "Brown Eyed Girl", though!

Here's some silliness I recorded a while back:

I play Great Highland Bagpipes, Highland Smallpipes, and tin whistle.

I might be taking a guitar class this fall.

Alas, I haven;t managed to figure out how to bridge my 'pipes to Jazz. There have been a few EXCEPTIONAL Jazz experts who have worked on it, but so far no one has done it.

(No one mention Rufus Harley... it sounds like crap and he doesn;t know how to play pipes... he just does things with badly tuned ones)

I was a music major for my first year of college (now change to youth ministry/theology, but that's another story) anyway, i played lead trumpet in my college's jazz band that played festivals against school all over the country. I haven't played in like 2 years, i got really burned out playing gigs every night in downtown kc for peanuts. i could out scream anybody in the Kc area, it actually put me in the hospital due to hyper-ventilation with a mild case of dehydration one night. Jamming would be cool, but it would take me a month to get my chops back, not to mention i suck with changes... playing lead for me meant no solos, just screaming. (hence my im name ajvscreams and here it's "The Lip" from Manyard Ferguson's song The Lip. I was told i should try out to play in his band by many people, but i never did. BTW, MF is probably the most famous screaming trumpet player. He still tours with his big band and if you have any remote interest in fast and loud jazz then you HAVE to look into his stuff. I got to party with him and the band one night after a concert, cool dude. i've got pictures somewhere around here.)

i'm starting a christian folk band that's 2 guitars, a violin, and a mandolin. (i'll be hopping between the guitar and mandolin) So far we suck, but it's just a matter time before we get things together. If anybody happens to know of some good resources online for such a band let me know. Thanks

Sorry about the long post, music is my life and i'm wired on a 2 liter of coke (i normally don't drink pop but i was exhausted at work tonight.)

why don't you try accompanying rap on the bagpipes, it's gotta be an improvement no matter HOW bad it sounds!

I have some MF stuff, including Brass Attitude (w/"The Lip"). However, as a guitarist, I'm much more interested in harmonically complex stuff. I love the Diz & Bird stuff from the late 40s and early 50s. Diz could scream (like the last bit of Groovin' High), but he could also do some incredible things with scale and arpeggio substitution (like the run at the start of his solo on Groovin' High, and the run at the start of Ko Ko). I love the guitar, because I can concentrate more on melodic and harmonic complexity and less on my chops.

Speaking of screaming, I saw the coolest thing the other day. Mike Metheny, the incredible trumpet player and Pat's brother, did a jazz clinic in town with his EVI, an electronic trumpet. I guess it's kind of like playing a saxophone, only without so many keys, and it's not always so damned sharp!

I started a church band also. We play mostly standards, but working with a bass player who misses every other change and two saxophonists who can't solo using anything other than the blues scale isn't exactly pleasurable. At least we have a good drummer.

to do musical background to rap and hip hop would be easier on pipes than doing jazz.

No lie. I've done it

There is ONE band that has done a very nice Celtic/Jazz fusion, although I wouldn;t exactly call it Jazz afterwards.

The band is no longer around, but was named Rare Air.

Their last album, Space Piper, is the one I refer to, since their 2 previous albums, Primevel and Hard to Beat are quite different, and a different band membership.

Space Piper is still published on Green Linnet record I think.

I would love to hear the Highland Bagpipes in a blues.
The only thing nearing that that I've heard is AC/DC's Long Way to the Top.

I'll do an acoustic blues solo on my yamaha acoustic if you like as long as the tempo isn't at one of birds and dizzy's extremely fast bebop deals.

I used to play sax and clarinet, but it's been a while since I've had a go so I'd probably suck now (plus I had all my front teeth smashed out in a pub fight, and I've got no feeling in my top teeth. Tends to make my playing squeaky coz I don't know how much pressure I'm putting on the reed) I also play the drums - not the full kit, just the little 'un like a jembe, bongos...etc

Q. What's the dynamic range of a bass trombone?

Recording audio on the computer really isn't all that difficult. You just get a multitrack audio studio (Pro Tools for 68k AV, Pro Tools Free 5 for Classic PPC, Deck 3.5 Demo for OS X, and Quartz Audio Master Freeware for Windoze) and record each part on there. It's really cool - you can do all the incredible multitracked stuff that Les Paul used to do (like Brazil), or Lynyrd Skynyrd-ish guitar battles. When you're done, you mix it down to an MP3.

Finale Notepad won't run on a 68k. The latest version that will run is Finale 97. You'll have to search Hotline for it.

I'm a fair guitar player (played in a couple blues/rock bands back in HS- we played the county fair! ), and I can also play accordian, some piano, and a bit of drums... but guitar is the only one I'm really any good at.
If someone wants to start something, lemme know!

*I smile as I resurrect a seemingly dead topic about 20 days later *

I'm a trombone section leader in my high school band, and I'm fairly good, I can definitely play some jazz to add to the track

To continue the revival of this topic.... I too was a section leader of the trombone section in my band, and I played in the jazz band and the pep band during my high school years. In my section, I had a family line going. Sorta went by class, like I had a 'dad', and two 'uncles'. I had a 'brother' and then a year down from me I had a 'son' . He was good on the trombone, when he was a freshman, he knocked me off the top seat in the section! That was my high school debauchery. Now that I'm in college at Valparaiso, I haven't been as involved with playing the t-bone, but last year I was in the pep band, which plays at home ballgames, and gets to travel with the basketball team during tournament time! This last spring Valpo made it to the first round of the NCAA tournament, and I got to go to St. Louis for that! Sadly we were taken out by Kentucky in that first game, but our team put up a valiant effort! Even after the mens team lost, our womens team continued to play in the NIT tourney. While at Michigan, we pep band people started getting crazy with our cheering and chanting and whatnot! Here is a news article about the band and that ballgame! Anyhow, I want to get into some other bands at college, to become more involved with it again, because I love playing the trombone.

You rock macdaddy!! In my band, we don't have the family thing going, although I do consider my 2nd chair player as a brother. We only have three 'bones right now, myself (senior), my bro (sophomore), and a freshman. As for jazz band, we haven't officially ever had one, but we did get a group together to practice. We have a new director this year, so I hope we can actually perform this year. I'm also band president, so I have to deal with getting fundraisers set up, I have to coordinate the Booster organiation with the band, and etc... No small affair there! Well, I'm hoping to play for New Mexico State University next year, so I'll definitely keep on with the trombone. I do hope you become more involved, I definitely would if I were in your position!!
