I got this with an SE/30 that I recently liberated. Doesn't seem to be any info. anywhere on the 'net that I can find. Also no real distinguishing identification on the drive itself. On the front it just has "LaCie" on a black label near the left of the unit and under the cartridge slot it says "44 MEGABYTE". There is a silver label on the back that reads "LaCie, Ltd." and then "106791" below that. It's got 2 Centronics-50 SCSI ports, a push-button SCSI ID selector, and 2 grounded AC outlets. The cartridge has a white label with 2 barcodes on it. Under the first barcode is the number "30412KS" and under the second is "46B60E". I know I've seen these before, but can't seem to remember exactly where. What I may do is (if possible), swap the cartridge drive out for a CD-ROM (it appears to be a standard 5-1/4" drive-size device). If anyone has any info on this...thing...please let me know. -Chad |

Think of it as a 44MB precursor to the Zip drive and it all makes sense. They were hella bitchin' back in the early 90's, when 44MB could quite comfortably hold every piece of data you ever needed. However, nowadays they're mostly only valuable in terms of nostalgia, as even finding two working units to use on different machines (i.e. fulfilling the original intention of the device) would be an exercise in futility. Fitting a CD-ROM, Zip drive, or any other SCSI device into the SCSI case would be extremely easy, however! Though, keep in mind there will be no elegant way to get audio out if you put a CD-ROM in it. Best bet would be to run a male-mini-to-male-mini stereo cord from the front of the CD-ROM (the headphone output) to the host Mac's audio input (that's what I ended up having to do with one of my CD-ROM towers). 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |
