Hello all. I guess I better start from square 1:I format 3.5 disks on my Mac Classic and on the PC If I put the disk formatted in the Mac, in the PC, it asks if I want to format the disk. If I put the disk formatted in the PC in the Mac, it says the disk isn't initialized (I realize I'm being redundant for clarity's sake). Don't I have to at least get both computers to read the same blank disk if I'm going to share RTF. files? Thanks for staying tuned. |

With System 7.5 and higher, you get a "PC Exchange" control panel that lets you read PC disks. IIRC, Apple also made some sort of Macintosh File Exchange (?) program that let you read PC disks on System 7.1 and below. If you need to be able to read PC disks on System 7 or 7.1 and you can't find another program to do it, you can use TomeViewer to extract the PC Exchange control panel from the System 7.5 installation tomes. I did that on my IIsi and it works fine. OK, step 2 would be to click on the desktop and then the apple menu to get the "about this computer (might say macintosh)" information screen and then report the O.S. installed on your Classic. you might as well give us the memory configuration too while you're at it.jt ™. System 7.1 (the correct term--'OS' was not used until 8.0) came with a utility called 'Apple File Exchange'; if that's not what Trash80 sent you, I've got it (probably available from Apple Downloads, too--but it's sometimes hard to find the file you're looking for there)./Mr Lynn Curator of: SE (6.0.4), SE w. 020 accelerator (6.0.8), SE w. no HD, IIfx (7.1), IIci (bad HD); plus various PPCs in family (blue G3/350 is main Mac these days). |

You might want to try the DOSmounter demo at http://www.edprint.demon.co.uk/se/DOSmount-demo.sit.hqxSee http://macinfo.its.queensu.ca/Mark/formats/AFE.html for more info on PC Exchange. it's the mac usergroup way for all the old timers.here in the forums, it translates well to a new web format with this new generation of users in the MLA, IMHO. alas, apple seems to have a somewhat different ethic! jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

On the PC (Windows) side, you can use Transmac (which I use) or HFV Explorer. Both these programs will read Mac formatted 1.4mb disks (and can format them too)Both these programs deal with the necessary file conversion business (resource fork stuff etc etc). So, if downloading on a PC: Download required Mac file Open up Transmac/HFV Explorer Insert Mac formatted disk (or format a new one) Select File Select Copy Across Leave Automatic conversion on. Remove disk Put disk in Mac Unstuff/unbinhex/whatever Run program! Long winded, but it works well! Cheers
