I was looking around the San Jose Flea Market today in search of some intresting Mac finds, when what catches my eye but a cute little 165c. It looked in fairly good condition and included a battery but no AC adapter and was stated in unknown condition. With my wallet out, I ask the seller what he may be asking for this little powerbook. And what does he say....$75...I tried to keep the laughing down as I walked on.

I once went into Cash Converters and saw a PowerBook 145B they wanted 300 bucks for. About a year later, i found a bunch of bits and built one for next to nothing...

Thrift store in my area wanted $40 USD for a Mac LC, no monitor, no RAM, no HD. They also wanted $25 for a StyleWriter I (which had visible case damage). Makes you wonder what these people are smoking before pricing these things.

the local resale folks by and large are clueless when it comes to used 68k hardware. I've seen prices like $125.00 for a dead LC at "goodwill", and then a few weeks later a 2400k modem for $8.50. However, I've managed to score an SE FDHD, ImageWriterII and keyboard/mouse for $25.00. I also picked up a Classic II with software (7.0.1, Word 5.00, Sim City & Fax STF) for $20.00. Got a used Stylewriter 1500 for $15.00, so you just have to look around.

Total haul thus far:

'89 SE FDHD 4/80
'90 Classic 4/80 <- My first Mac
'93 LCII 10/160 w/Mac Color Display
'94 Performa 466 20/160
'94 Performa 636CD 36/850, CD, 14.4 Modem 14" Monitor
ImageWriterII, StyleWriterII, Color StyleWriter 1500

Had Performa 467 but the video chip was bad, stripped it for parts. I'm looking for basically anything that I don't already have. I'd like to get my hands on a AV Quadra.

I have looked everywhere to get a cheap mac. Anyone know where to get a fairly new mac, like a PPC without paying 500$?

how new?

You can get something like a 85/8600 or 95/9600 for a reasonable price then upgrade it as much as you want and the tech will allow. Almost anything that's not beige is going to cost a little more than it might seem it's worth, IMHO.

I've been told that the BW g3s are coming down, and (if you want to save up) they are there for less then $500

I have a 6100 that maybe you can use when I'm done with it...that is, once it's fixed and has Copland

hehehe, At the RePC in seattle, they want usually more than $100 for any PCI mac, and anything Apple that's not in the as is section, YOU ARE going to pay more than $10 for... it's not that bad though... I got my Adjustable In box for $15 USD

Beware of the Mac Man in Seattle though, (in RePC) he must always be smoking something, because he's got a "broken" G3AIO, I'm sure he doesn't have the OS for it, it didn't have any physical damage... and it was very pretty... I should take os 8.1 to him and maybe allow him to let me have the G3 (the entire complement of AV I/O is what makes it nice)

check the bottom! how to know if you don't know the model numbs (like me! :

non-backlit : everything on the bottom is on there with black print.

backlit : everything on the bottom is etched

if it IS a backlit, but it doesn't work, sell it to me! I need portable parts to fix mine up!!

THnx

What's even funnier about that "museum piece" is that they think it's 20-25 years old.

How do these people manage to reproduce? :P

Read the explanation/intro for the Darwin Awards. It explains how they got here to start with and why they proliferate so much. :)

I saw a working TiBook with a cracked screen... Can you believe the guy wanted to sell it for 150 bucks.... I laughed in his face and told him good luck with trying to sell that...

If the only thing wrong with it was the cracked screen, then it's worth more than 150 bucks... You could use an external monitor with it, and it's a decent G4 to boot!

Go find that guy again! You can buy it for 150, get a replacement screen off eBay, and still save a few hundred off the cost of what fully-intact TiBooks go for on eBay.

Determination is the key, I saw a B&W G3 for $500 on ebay - no reserve and a bunch of other stuff, like extra RAM and accesories. I wish I had an extra $500 myself. I've also seen Beige G3's go for $80-300 depending on configuration. You can upgrade those to G4 500 Mhz real easy for less than $400 - they have a ZIF processor socket which is kinda like a PCI slot. You can put a CD-RW or DVD drive in it and a FireWire/USB card and you have a great system for less than a $1000.
