wow, mac-boy, you REALLY are anti-zip aren't you? sheesh! get a syquest and stop complaining!  I've had a usb zip 250 (external power source - not bus powered) for almost three years now and its been fine, albeit MUCH louder than the scsi 100 I liberated a few months ago...must be a cheaper mechanism or something, but boy was it expensive! --------------------

I have a SCSI Zip 100, but it's worked reliably for several years. No click of death or anything. It's much more reliable than floppy drives (yuck!) but it lacks the coolness factor and large capacity of the NeXT Cube's magneto-optical drive. BTW, if anyone has a Turbo Color NeXT slab with monitor and soundbox for a reasonable price (<$100), I'm looking for one.The new USB Zip drives are cheap but flimsy. A friend of mine got a 100 MB one to match his iMac. It makes a lot of noise, and the printed circuit board rattles because it's not tightly wedged into the case. He says it hasn't died yet. No, get a Bernoulli! (I've had my 230MB for about 10 years, and it still works fine. Rugged. Reliable. Used to back up to it and carry stuff to service bureaus. No real use now, but I fire it up now and then just for the heck of it. I got a pair of 90 MB "Mac Transportable" Bernoulli drives a while ago...never got around to playing around with them...those handles are mighty cool, though --------------------

Also, to add totaly irrelavance to this conversation, Floptical technology lead Sony to develop the MiniDisc. It's the same magneto-optical technology on higher density disks. Becasue it's stereo there is actually enough space to store 2 Mono CDs of data it's just the two r/w heads r/w the two sides symultaneously to get both channels at once. Of course there us a mono record option too :).Hey I have no experience with any of the Syquest/Benoulli/Floptical drives and my Zip drive has not died on me yet in 2.5 years. Having said that it is a Zip100 USB and it was made long after Iomega got their nuts kicked over 'klik of deff' --

Wasn't the Bernoulli a different technology from Syquest and also from Iomega's later removable drives, like Zip and Jaz? As I recall (treading on very shakey ground here, on the edge of ignorance) it used the 'bernoulli effect' of a spinning disk in air to bring the the disk to the heads, rather than the reverse--but I may have that garbled. After Bernoullis Iomega abandoned the technology.Anyway, they were very rugged. Iomega used to advertise that the cartridges could surived being dropped onto concrete--or am I confusing that with something else, too? /Mr Lynn (substituting speculation for information) PS Is it true that Zip disks have a built-in life span? There was some discussion of this on one of the trouble-shooting boards a couple of years ago, the upshot of which was: yes, it's true. AFAIK the bernoulli effect produced an air cushion that KEPT the heads from crashing as they were pressed as closely as possible to the magnetic surface on the rotating media for optimal storage density.IOMEGA bought the floptical drive technology and added optical indexing from it to allow for 100 MB of storage on what is for all practical purposes a bernoulli effect 3.5" floppy with cool optical windows on the bottom as i recall. (dimly!) btw: the click of death was not original to the early Zip Drives, i just can't recall the original "click of death" drive, offhand. jt ™.

I've never had a single problem with Zip drives/disks. However, Jaz disk/drives seem to be the most unreliable media ever created. I've had 2 Jaz disks completely fail (though, luckily, Iomega replaced them free) and oen Jaz drive that went dead!  666th poster and 666th thread-creator
