It's about Microsoft

dana

just kidding :). A way early cautionary tale about big government, control of people, control of information, the realistic subtleties in controlling thought not through really funky technological stuff, but shifts in language, concepts, media and... and it's been far too long since I've read it to say much more than the basics. I think i'd best go 'n get it.

AFAIK the term "Big Brother" originated in the book, written in the late 40's (ish)... that sums up quite a lot of it.

dana (off to hunt down 1984 stuff now)

The book may help a little more, if you're in for the reading... The full text is at:

READ THE BOOK!

It's one of the classics of 20th-century literature, and close enough to scifi that even non-literary geeks (no slur intended--I read mostly scifi, and have since the '50s) will enjoy it.

Forget the computer and handle a real book for a change--available at any bookstore, or at your local library.

George Orwell, 1984.

I've read the book, and this is how I see it.
four companies will eventually own everything and rule the world, most likely coca-cola, disney, mordorspounge and CP rail. I'm not gonna give away the book to ppl who havent read it yet, but heres my sum of it

The Ministry of Truth = CP rail
The Ministry of Peace = diseny
The Ministry of Love = coco-cola
the Ministry of Plenty = mordarspounge

if anybody else wants to change this any, go ahead.

As Bill Gates wishes he could say:

"All software companies are equal, but some software companies are more equal than others. Therefore, all of Microsoft's actions are within the scope of morality, legality, and decency."

oops! wrong book!

Nothing wrong with a little diversion every now and then

Of course, you know the "key lime" iBook was a last minute change, cos Soylent Green was apparently not going down to well with marketing...

...or marketing weren't going down too well with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

If you have a 68040 and don't like reading get MpegDec and download a few mp3 clips from the 1984 movie at http://www.newspeakdictionary.com/go-movie.html
