I was just over at the thrift store (as I am every day), seeing how much they wanted for one of the last three remaining IBM 300GL's. I need the CD-ROM, since I can't get a SCSI CD-ROM to work in the one I got, and I wouldn't mind having a second hard drive. They want $10 for one of the broken ones, which as far as I know just has a bad PSU or mobo or something.

Anyway, I came across two new items of special interest! The first is a HUGE SCSI CD tower! It's made to lay horizontally, as there's rubber feet on the broad side of it, and there's 6 caddy-loaded SCSI CD-ROM's mounted vertically along the length of it, with room for one more 5.25" device. They wants $25 for it, but I'm hoping they'll go lower after it's been there a while. I'm not worried about anybody else taking it, because it's just so useless. However, connected to one of my 68k Macs, it would make a great CD Jukebox!

Even better than that tower, I found an external, Smart and Friendly model 4012 SCSI CD burner! It's in a low-profile SCSI case with RCA audio outs on the back, burns at 4 speed and reads at 12. Best of all, they only want $10 for it! I only have $4 on me, though, so I put it on hold and will have to come back tonight to pick it and the parts-IBM up. Whee!!!

It seems like everytime I think that "No one else will buy it, so I can starve them out", I go back in a few days, and someone else bought it. Of course Mac stuff seems to be in really high demand around here, I am always amazed when I see someone selling a Mac for some obscenely high price at a garage sale, and the next time I drive past, someone has bought it.

Too bad you're 3000 miles away... I've got two that I rescued from a local accounting firm: 7 drive minitower with 7 CR-506 CD-ROMS (8x, generic version of Apple's 1200i).

I keep meaning to look around for a non-profit that could use them. (That and the 40 port 10/100 switch. :-)

Hey, so I ended up getting both the last remaining "non-working" IBM 300GL and the Smart & Friendly CD-R last week. The IBM actually worked fine, it just had a faulty outside power button. I took the 24x IDE CD-ROM and what turned out to be a 2.5GB IDE hard drive out of it and into the IBM I'm going to be keeping. I still haven't installed an OS on it, but I should be able to tonight.

Also, the Smart & Friendly works BEAUTIFULLY! I can't believe somebody actually gave it away to a thrift store...even older 4-speed SCSI burners like it still sell for $40 or more on eBay (that's how much I paid for the Yamaha one I already have). So, I took the Yamaha 4x/8x burner out of the Dual CD-ROM tower I had connected to my 7500 and put it into my Quadra 840av...it works great! The slim-tray goes in and out of the Quadra's caddy-load bezel perfectly! The only thing is you have to keep a disk in it at all time or else you can't eject.

I then connected the external Smart & Friendly to my 7500 and started burning...it's working flawlessly under Toast 5.1.3! The tray ejects and retracts really fast, unlike the slow-poke Yamaha, which is also nice. Gotta love it! I'm still thinking abotu getting the 7-slot CD tower, which does in fact have really sexy RUBBER feets, which makes it cooler than the average CD tower. Just have to see how low they're willing to go...

Time for OpenStep, Mandrake Linux, BeOS, and a DrDOS partition so you can play Secret Agent, System Shock, and Descent! Remember, OpenStep likes its partition to start within the first two gigabytes of the master drive. Linux will work just about anywhere, as will DrDOS, but I'm not sure about BeOS.

Have fun, and see my website if you have any problems with OpenStep. (You'll probably want to use the option to install and leave some free space.) And remember, PCs are only bad when they're running Windoze or they're made by Compaq.
