These were scheduled for termination by one of the administrative departments at my school/work. The '30's HD appears dead (it spins, but never mounts), and I haven't tried the LaCie drive yet. I don't even know where I'd find drivers for that (it's apparently too old to be on their list of "Discontinued products"). I've got spare HDs, but can't think of a use for the machine yet...I'm open to ideas or offers (shipping charges only, but that's not gonna be cheap).

If that Lacie drive is external, then you'll need no drivers. Just some scsi voodoo luck. i also had/have and external lacie drive. It's held many drives, started at a 40 something meg and worked it's way up to a 3 gig and is now empty. Nice little case, but be sure you don't put a drive in there that creates a ton of heat (yes, a ton). For example the infamous barracuda 7200 rpm 2.1 gig drive. That thing got REALLY hot and had problems in that very compact case.

I don't know what your arsenal looks like, but se/30s are great for file servers. Plus the compact-ness of the se/30 is nice for an extra web browser, irc client, web server, router (!!!), etc. There's always a use for a mac. My personal favorite thing for compact macs is that i fix them up and hand them out to kids i know. They are the perfect size and they can introduce them to usable computers. I've made a few parents mad, but it's been worth it.

If you have absolutely no use for this Se/30 i might be interested in the motherboard, but i have a few other deals i have to work out first here at the mla.

Sorry about the rambling. I just got a hot date for friday and i'm giggy.

No, the drive itself is dead. I can hear it wanting to spin, but it never gets all the way through it's hardware initialization, but continues to spin at varying speeds. Also, the LaCie drive is the 44Mb cartridge drive. The cartridge itself is pretty cool...like 2 big ol' HD platters in a smoked plastic case. I know I've seen tons of these things before (at show about 5 years ago, this guy was selling them, with cartridge, 4 for $1), but I can't seem to find any info on them now. May be rare to have one still in functional condition...who knows.

Anyway, my arsenal already includes another SE/30, a Classic II, Mystic CC, a few Centri, several IIvx's and a handful of PPC machines. So, needless to say, I don't have an immediate need for the new '30. Hmmm...maybe swap the '30 guts into the Classic II case. I always thought that was a much "cleaner" looking machine (the CII, that is).

Nice idea, although putting the mobo in may be a challenge, as the SE/30 mobo is bigger than the Classic II mobo, and there's only a small amount of space for it to slide in, unless you remove the fan. The Classic II case is nice, although i prefer the more "sophisticated" look of the SE/30.

Have you *any* idea how hard it is to clean those squillions of slots in the case moulding on an SE/30? Bloody nightmare it is.....

if you can take the case off, maybe you could pressurewash it or something.

Re: use for another SE/30 -- I just put A/UX on mine. Wicked easy install process, and the OS is fun and educational. And it's just plain freaky-cool to see OS 7 running on top of real old fashioned Unix (we don't need no steenking Linux), running on unmodified Mac hardware.

A/UX isn't easy to find <cough68kmlahotlineserver> but it ain't too difficult either.
