I have purchased a 4.3 gig hard drive of ebay for use with myt quadra.

My intention is to use my 1.2 gig as my boot drive(currently my secondary drive and HFS formatted) and to use the 4.23 gig as my secondary drive.

I will need to reformat my 1.2 gig so that my Quadra can boot from it. But my 1.2 gig has data on it which I wish to keep.

let me think.............

Why do you need to reformat the 1.2? Just install a System.

I had to do something kind of like this when I upgraded the HD in my 6100. Though the 6100 has only one hard drive bay, the procedure for your Mac should be similar.

First, be sure you have the jumper settings diagram for the new drive, and several jumpers. If the seller didn't give you the jumpers, bring your drive to any computer store and ask for some. Be sure to get ones that fit your drive correctly.

While you work with the drives, be sure to follow proper anti-static procedures. Hard drives and their on-board controllers are quite vulnerable to static.

Disconnect the CD-ROM drive from the SCSI bus and power supply, set the new HD to an unused SCSI ID with the jumpers, and turn off its termination. Connect the new hard drive to the CD-ROM's power cable and SCSI cable. If your new drive came in a static protection bag, set the drive on top of that. You don't need to mount it yet. Boot your machine normally, and use Drive Setup to format the new drive. You'll probably want to format it HFS+ if you're using OS 8.1 and you won't be booting from the new drive. Once the drive is formatted, copy everything from the 1.2 GB drive onto the 4.3 GB drive. You can then use Drive Setup to reformat the 1.2 GB drive (HFS, if you're planning to boot from it). Install a system on the 1.2 GB drive, and copy any files, control panels, and extensions that you've added to the original boot drive to the new 1.2 GB boot drive. Your drives will be as follows:

Original Boot Drive: OS 8.1 with other system files
1.2 GB Drive: OS 8.1 with other system files
4.3 GB Drive: Files that used to be on the 1.2 GB drive

You can now re-arrange the drives in the machine. The 1.2 GB drive should have SCSI ID 0 and have termination enabled. Use the jumpers to set this. The 4.3 GB drive should have SCSI ID 1 and have termination disabled. Once you've set up the drives, put the drives on sleds, and put them in the machine, you can reconnect the SCSI and power cables to the CD-ROM and the two drives. Turn on the machine: it should boot from the 1.2 GB drive into OS 8.1, and the 4.3 GB drive should show up on the desktop.

A nice comprehensive reply.

Here is the current situation;

I have a 1.2 gig drive scsi 0 & it is at the terminated bit of the scsi cabling. I tried to connect the 4.23 gig drive but it wasn't recognised, although it made clicking noises every so often(4.23 gig now disconected.

The seller provided me with a spare jumper & the 4.23 gig is set to scsi id 4.

Hard drive model: Seagate Barracuda st34573N
Formatted Capacity: 4.23 Gbyte
Format: HFS standard
Installed Drivers: Hard disk speed tools
SCSI ID: 4
Termination off

Ok my computer is naked!

now I have an idea that I understand this jumper business, shall I just try changing the drives scsi number?

I attatched the drive to the cd rom bit of cable and the computer didnt boot.

unhook the external devices and try booting again the way it is if it is still set on scsi id 4, it might be conflicting with your CD-R, did you ever check out the ID on it. if you sdon't have SCSI Probe, get it now!

why were you worried about the ID on it already then?

try gamba or one of the other links on the website or just google it. look for 3.5, that's the one i like for 68k's.

try: SCSIProbe-3.5

I have gotten the computer to "see" the drive, in the drive set-up dialogue. Now how do I format it to HFS+ ?

dunno offhand . . . check out whatever "drive setup" or whatever came in the disk tools in utilities in your O.S.

I had the 4.23 gig up & running, then removed it from the machine........... cos my 1.2 gig gave up on me! it just half loaded the os then stalled. so I reinstalled os 8.1. But then I wanted my old set-up which I had saved(the first time I have ever done a serious backup), so I attached the 500 meg drive and copied everything from it to my 1.2 gig.

IT DIDNT WORK.

Well everything is back except the configuration files it seems. & I had to re-enter all the set-up details for Netscape. I had about 120 emails, but now I dont know where they might be.

you can only copy a boot disk reliably by doing a direct scsi-scsi transfer/copy as far as i know. i forget what you call it, i can do it with a couple of my utilities. AFAIK there are a bunch of invisible files that the finder doesn't know to copy when you drag the visible parts of the system folder from one drive to another.

backing up email in netscape is something i'd love somebody to explain, it sounds like a good idea, i've got a bunch of stuff i'd like to keep. exporting bookmarks seem fairly easy.
