[The following was posted on the Mac Managers List, where I lurk. I'd be tempted to grab these SEs myself, but I already have two I'm not using, and don't live in the SF Bay area. They sound like they need good homes, though. /Mr Lynn]quote:

Message-ID: <20020628201303-r01010800-87b18b4e-0860-0108@192.168.0.35>Apologies in advance if this is a bit outside the normal "urgent questions only," but I've searched for an answer to this on and off for a few months now with no good answers. Does anyone know of a good place to donate old Macs to in the San Francisco Bay Area? As I understand it, BMUG is defunct, and they used to get my hand-me-downs. The schools don't seem very interested as they only want reasonably new generation computers (probably due to our proximity to Silicon Valley). Any ideas? Maybe just someplace like the old Wierd Stuff Warehouse? I have two Mac SEs wth 10baseT/10base2 Ethernet cards in them. I believe one has an adapter for an external display. Standard keyboards and mice to go with them. I believe they have 4 MB of RAM and whatever stock hard drive was in them. Running Mac OS 6 or 7 as I recall when the came out of production as copywriter stations at a graphics firm I worked at 5 years ago. Was going to use them as X-10 kiosks, but that project is dead. Specific phone numbers and addresses most helpful. Will summrize, of course! Kevin Quosig, Owner Quiet Type --- Friday, June 28, 2002 8:10 PM PDT

an SE with ethernet AND a monitor card would be way cool, just the ethernet cards alone are interesting. i think SE 10baseT cards are fairly rare, so i wonder if these might be SE/30's, that'd be even better with a video card! but i'm not much closer than you are! jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF p.c. i'm probably just fantasizing about SE/30's, they'd have at least 5 MB of RAM if the tech at that graphics shop isn't a total dork. Did the SEs have more than one slot? They did have one, I think, as there was a company marketing an accelerator w. external monitor driver, all-in-one--who was it? I don't recall hearing about an Ethernet card for an SE, but all I ever did in those days was LocalTalk--had three SEs linked to a laser printer, at one time--so I might not have noticed. System 6 didn't support file sharing (but there was third-party software that did; never had it, though).Hmmm. If I had that card, I could hook up my 020 SE to the E-LAN.... /MrLynn Curator of: SE (6.0.4), SE w. 020 accelerator (6.0.8), SE w. no HD, IIfx (7.1), IIci (bad HD); plus various PPCs in family (blue G3/350 is main Mac these days). |

just one, my Radius16 (020) accelerator has its own format PDS passthru to install their FPD or TPD card, to use one without an accelerator you needed their funky MagicBus adapter card.Total Systems (?) had a bunch of different accelerator options. i think they resold the same european accelerators that other companies did, IIRC, and it had a video option. (probably a daughtercard, don' remember, may have tearsheets or old mags somewhere)

...or he thinks that that the 25pin (? I forgot what the protocol is called) port that's on my nubus ethernet cards is video port. that mistake has been made before._______________________ Sgt. Thelip Heavy Weapons Specialist 950 division Liberated Macs: 12 |

that'd be DB-15 (kinda) thicknet, but if he's calling "thinnet" 10base2 (the co-ax type), he likely knows what a 10base5 port (thicknet) looks like. some SE/30 cards have all three, but i'll bet it's a DB-9 and he knows what it's for.. . . or not! jt ™. 020 SE?
That's the SE with the 020 accelerator in my sig. But let's not get lost in the details. The question before us is: IS ANYBODY GOING TO GET THESE SEs BEFORE THEY END UP IN THE DUMPSTER? Thanks! Looked at the discussion, couldn't add input without registering (sorry, I have enough unwanted e-mail and I won't be following the boards regularly). But it sounds like some clarifying might be in order: --Yes, they both have combo 10baseT/10base2/ThickNet cards (RJ/BNC/AUI, all three ports). I forget who made them. They fit in the back expansions slot of standard SEs (not SE/30). They are not accelerators. They were damned tricky to install (I remember purchasing and installing them). --I'd have to double-check if of the two I have one has the external monitor hookup. I never was able to find a monitor to work with it, but I had it open once, believe it was called ProView, made by RasterOps or Focus I think. Looks like a hard-wired setup with a little black mini-box with a cable running through the Kensington lock slot on the SE (just hanging out the back). If this is a key feature wanted, let me know and I can verify I still have that one. It was either for a monitor or for one of the old external LCD projectors sold during that era. ON A SIDE NOTE: I also have a 3.5" Fujistsu DynaMO (magneto optical drive). May or may not be functional. I believe I took it home to see if I could repair it or to see if it was more compatible on an older system. It's SCSI in a tiny external enclosure. All of this stuff is FREE if someone wants it!
Have them contact me directly with further questions. THANKS! TIME TO SEND IN THE TROOPS! WHERE'S THE GENERAL STAFF?! /Mr Lynn PS If no one wants these great SEs, is there anyone who can tell Kevin where to find good homes for them in the Bay area? As he says, you can contact him directly. I hope some of the advance troops already have. He doesn't say so, but if you don't live in the Bay area, I see no harm in asking about shipping--if you paid for it. /Mr Lynn Curator of: SE (6.0.4), SE w. 020 accelerator (6.0.8), SE w. no HD, IIfx (7.1), IIci (bad HD); plus various PPCs in family (blue G3/350 is main Mac these days). |
