I just had A friend call me about a classic she bought used at a garage sale. It was supsed to work but when it starts up, it displays a black and white checkerboard pattern. Also, could someone tell me what the key combo is for the classic to boot off of the ROM? Thanks.

I wonder if it's the standard grey desktop but with easy-access' magnification on?

command-option-x-o

it's a weird combo of some system 6 stuff. finder 6.1 and system 6.0.3

That's the ONLY useful thing about the classic.

if it doesn't even give you a happy Mac icon or say, "Welcome to Macintosh", and gives you the checkerboard pattern instead, i'd say its probably a dead analog board...

Alas, I've been away too long. Stupid school. All I really wanna do is play with macs (the real ones, none of this Reduced Instruction Set Crap).

For the video problem, try:
<http://www.biwa.ne.jp/~shamada/fullmac/repairEng.html>

To boot the Classic from ROM, hold down Command-Option-P-R at startup.

Alright, the Classic Problem is a dead motherboard. If the analog was dead, you wouldnt be getting a display at all.

Actually, i have heard of compacts with dead analog boards suffering from this problem, even though the logic board was good.

She just e-mailed me and said that booting off of the rom worked and installed 6.0.8 or 7.5.3 on it. Thankyou very much for all of your help.

No, thelip was right, it's Cmd-Opt-X-O. P-R does a PRAM reset. (I use the ROM system all the time on my dual floppy Classic. If only I could get a TCP/IP stack in there.

Yesterday I found a classic with the exact same problem is a thrift store around here for $3. I'm going to have to go back and try the key combo to see if this one is only hibernating too.

Cheers!

Looks like this on'e a deader. Exploded PRAM battery, and the resulting rather ugly melted mess on that corner of the mobo apperars to be a possible cause.

Oh well. I've washed off the worst of it and given it a nice scrub with an old toothbrush... so just maybe...

Anyone need a classic RAM expansion board? Or a clean case for a fishtank? Or any other bits for that matter? Let me know.

Cheers!

This symptom is *extremely* common on old macs - a component has gone bad on the motherboard or the ram/ram card is not seated all the way. Seen it HUNDREDS of times at Goodwill when I was there.

This problem is very common, as Jag says. Do a google search for simasimac, and you'll find a site or two devoted to explaining its causes and possible cures. It's not an analog problem; it's a logic board problem, folks!

Easy things to try: Remove and reseat all memory cards, and all connectors.

If that doesn't do it, you probably have some bad capacitors. Look on the logic board for tell-tale stains around the electrolytic caps (small silvery can things). If you see such stains, that's it.

The pram battery can leak, too, causing similar problems. If the gook hasn't eaten the pc board traces, cleaning might do the trick (as well as replacing the leaky caps). If the traces are eaten away, you can pretty much kiss it goodbye. It's not worth fixing, unless you have LOTS of free time, patience and skill.
