Ok, I've spent some time messing with what was mentioned in an earlier post about localtalk adapters and connecting newtons to ncu over appletalk.

Here was my setup:

8500 osx
ncu in classic (that's classic in osx, not os9)
appletalk over ethernet

q650 8.1
ncu
appletalk over ethernet

I have 2 different localtalk adapters that i tried:

Farallon Etherwave MAc/pb adapter
(it's the green ones, with daisy chain capabilities)

Sonic microprint/12

I tried on my newton 130 and 2000
(on the 2000, i used the dongle)

here's what happened:

The only successful combo was the microprint and the 2000. The 130 is seeing the appletalk zone correctly and sometimes sees the macs, but I think it's timing out or something, because it can never make an actual connection. The etherwave adapter, didn't work with either newton. That surprised me because i expected the etherwave to work and the microprint to fail. Once I have a little more free time. (the weekend of july 7th looks good, family is out of town for 5 days!!!!) I'll setup a mac as a router for localtalk/ethernet and see what happens with that. Although i think it's silly, since you could just connect the newton to that machine and leave it. One helpful thing is that if you do your surfing on the ppc with osx, then you just leave the packages on that and have your newton get to it without moving files all around. (that's what i was doing until i found out ncu worked in classic)

i hope this was helpful, i'll post more when i know more.
