Can I have one?How much are they? I have a thing(I keep wanting to call them cpx's as this is what they were on atari) underneath the apple on my desktop I have a cache option in the control panels(yes thats it a control panel extension?) and it says two options; faster cache enabled and the other option erm cache not enabled which is apparently more compatible for some software. that'd be for the built in cache in the 68040, Apple threw that into the system because the L1(?) cache implementation broke a boatload of pre-quadra code in apps.this'd be one of those, "darn, i shoulda looked in Applespec, first!" kinda posts. getting in that habit cuts down on that: (I now take a deep breath) kinda anxiety. check there for L2 a/o L3 cache availability for your model. btw: control panels and extensions are different, but are many times observed to appear in matched sets. cp's are applets to adjust settings (system parameters) in the system software which are usually stored in the PRAM. extensions are system level hacks that allow macs to do stuff not provided for in firmware and the unmofified system software. drivers for peripherals being a good example and interface tweaks being a generally nasty variety in terms of conflicts overall. please correct me if this is not an appropriate explanation, comrades. jt ™. Leave the cache enabled in the Cache Switch control panel, otherwise the OS will be too slow to navigate! Trust me.The 840av doesn't have any options for different external caches, as there's no PDS slot to be found. However, you can go into the Memory control panel and increase your disk cache size if want to help speed things up a bit. Though, it helps if you have fast disk access beforehand. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

At times trash appears to be a big head know it all, and generally I "sift" through his replys carefully "reading between the lines as best I can.I am scared of trash. I dont understand "apple mac talk". I have often wandered through apple mac spec sites for hours on end only to come to the conclusion that I dont have the time nor the aptitude to follow what is written. I may start a forum for people who may not be apple mac savvy, but who wish to regain control of their pc(rather than the other way round) how embarrassing to be controlled by a box full of electrical gubbins. I must be as thick as erm a very thick thing that cant think of a phrase to describe how thick it feels. I struggle to interact positivly with trash, I am sure there is somthing for me to learn. did I mention that I am a paraniod insecure meglamaniac? I will now go and look for level 2 cache amongst apple mac specs. Personally I hope that me & trash can gain somthing positive here. "oh am I a neandethal? am I a loser mate? then why dont you kill me?" I started a new job recently and I completed a personality test, It showed that I am too sensitive! haha this is what people say to me alot. I live to learn. ouch! that confirms my worst fears!i try really hard not to come off like a know-it-all and still be as helpful as i can. please don't be afraid of me. rest assured that i'm in WAY over my head most of the time too! i'll bet a big part of your problem with me stems from the fact that when i was pulling cinemo's leg about his 840av, you thought i was serious and that i was also attacking YOUR beloved mac. i like to kid around a lot and i go overboard with it IRL. it's REALLY hard to gauge peoples reactions online! *now i wonder if they think i'm being a jerk over on fritter too! * quote:

Don't be scared of jt he just gets a bit long winded sometimes! Anyway, there's no option for L2 cache on the 840AV, the cache control panel deals with the L1 onboard cache of the 68040. Did I mention that USians also pronounce 'cache' the wrong way, too? Whoops, if only I typed a bit faster... ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

WHOA, i'm from kansas (i'm still here.) We call it "cash" and wash. Of course i'm near kansas city. I love hearing the stereotypical comments directed towards the midwest that all that's here is wheat and fields. It not all like the movies. True, a large area of the midwest is farms, but not many people live there. The concentrations of people live in the cities like any other state. Kansas City seems to take a lot of crap nationally, but we have a lot to offer (besides professional sports teams.) As far as i know ( i travel a lot) the only speech problems we in kansas have is that we talk too fast and too much. You have to go further south for the southern accent to kick in. Or hang out at the high schools and look for the cowboy wanna-bes. whew, sorry about the rant. I'm very sensitive about the labeling of people and being labeled because of what the movies and television portray. _______________________ Sgt. or for being posted as a federal district or supreme court judge under some administrations! the founding fathers would have taken a horsewhip to that atheistic putz in CA, they wanted to keep the government out of religion for very good reasons.since aethism became an officially oppressed group, instead of what i would legally consider to be just another peculiar brand of religion, the supremes have been particularly stupid in many decisions twisting the constitution into some kinda P.C. horsedroppings. i'm not at all convinced that the modern idea of keeping all "religion" out of government is a particularly good idea and i'm not even religious! oops, this oughta be a lounge kinda thing! whatever! jt ™. I lived in Kansas City for four years and I got so sick of hearing that certain "warsh" / "daywn" / bayunce" accent (not sure of the official name, as it's not truly Southern) that I nearly puked. However, I do understand where you're coming from. After I moved out of KC, whenever I told anyone that I used to live in Kansas, they'd break out the "Oh, did you have a dog named Toto?" stupidity. Some people even thought Kansas was in a different country! I'll tell you whatI had dismissed the idea of a level 2 cache but today I read that an 840 av could have a level 2 cache. Dont quote me yet but I believe it was the company that sells cpu accelerators, linked frum lowendmac. I shall investigate,. They annoyed me cos they say in one bit that you dont need to solder but in another bit they say you do. THERE IS NO WAY I am going to pay £20 & then bugger my quadra all for an extra measly 8mhz. shaktiman Quadra 840 av 128meg ram 1.2 gig drive 500 meg drive os 8.1 |

Here in Ohio, Us "Northwesterners" call a grocery toting device a "Sack". The "Southwesterners" call it a "Bag". The Northeasterners call it a "Sayack", and the southeasterners call it a "Bayag"-I got this information from a freshman english teacher...So It may not be all that reliable...but I work at a grocery store, and most people call them a "Sack" around here. don't even get me started on "Pop vs. Soda". England is very much divided accent wise north/south. What I have come to understand is that the vowels control accent a great deal. typing accents is an odd feeling, here are my vowel(not bowel) sounds A E I O U ae ee eye ohw you Named a eh ih o uh Sounds In England I have found that if you live north of a certain point(just below brum) then you can understand most northern talk but not southern(Doun souf) & the southerners have trouble understanding the northern accent. My wife is from London & cant follow Rab C Nesbit(Scottish accent) I have a bit of difficulty but can follow what is being said.
