I need to get a decent LaswerWriter at home for printing out higher quality logos and other greyscale graphics than my Canon USB bubblejet can. So, I'm looking for something cheap, networkable, and (of course), 68k compatible. I've found a handful of eBay auctions for older ones such as the LaserWiter NT and NTR, and I just wanted to know some basic pros and cons and things I should look for. I already know the differences in RAM capacity, I'm talking more about quirks or how to tell if the sucker will work in the field, etc.

One more thing, since these older Writers' only have LocalTalk, how can I convert that to RJ-45 so i can use it on my existing LAN?

i have an AsanteTalk bridge that i can recommend highly, but see if you can find a IIg and it'll have the AAUI port and it'll be much faster too.

you could also configure a 68k such as your IIci as a localtalk bridge if you have a NuBus NIC for it and you end up with a IInt, a IIntx or a IIf. i've never done it, but it sounds pretty easy from reports here.

I had a NTX for a year or so, my only complaint with the actual printer is that there is maintenance and parts and service are not easy to find. For example, my sheet feeder had worn out and i had to constantly struggle to clean it with rubbing alcohol about every 10 sheets or so.

Laserwriters do NOT ship well at all. There are tons of delicate parts that don't like to be moved.

Laserwriters need a ton of juice. (Electricity.)

If you were lucky, getting a IIg would be awesome. They do a much better resolution than lower models.

Try looking for a personal laserwriter and keep away from the big monsters.

I also recommend the asante localtalk adapter. I've used that and the farralon version and they both work well. Setting up a machine as your bridge is also quite simple, plus you can send the print jobs for that machine to process instead of your workstation.

One little perk about my NTX is that it had a scsi port to add external drives so it could cache fonts and print jobs. I never tried it, but it seemed like a cool gizzmo.

BTW, i trashed my NTX a month ago and bought an epson 820 which is an amazing printer for the money.

What do you need to do to set up a machine as a dedicated LocalTalk Ethernet Bridge and print spooler? Obviously you need the nifty control panel, but what software are we looking at for spooling?

you can share the printer like any other shared device ( i think you need the printer share extension) or you can get real serious and use something like the old appleshare software, i tried it, but it was a little to complicated for my needs. Having a print server is easy, making a bridge can be somewhat more difficult. (...in my experience.)

It doesn't say anything about setting up a server, though. If I had the software, it would give me an excuse to get an SE!
