Today, while I was at work, I was offered to come along on a presentation on the Xserve by Apple. I found out some interesting new things.

First off, The Xserve has only RAID 0 and 1 capabilities. It is unable to do RAID 5, 10, etc. The design is very nicely done, but we all knew that...

A few questions arose about RAID capabities in the future. The presenter showed us the design for the next evolution of Xserve's... The Xserve RAID. He did kinda mention he is showing more than they should (in other words, a violation of the NDA).

Here are some of the specs:
3U rackmount case
1.68TB of data space max
14 ATA/100 drive bays (14 independant ATA/100 drive channels, running at 200MB/sec)
2GB DDR memory
RAID 0, 1, 2, 5, etc.

Apple is working in conjuntion with other companies to make sure that the Xserve becomes a major player in the network server market. Each new Xserve RAID units are self sufficiant, and is designed to be self healing (if a problem arises, it will auto-fix itself so you don't have to fix it).

From what I hear, it was announced very breifly at Apple Expo (apparently no one noticed?). The entire unit will be available in the Fall. No price given yet...

In other related news, I scored a free Apple pen and an Xserve poster.

Anyway... back to work for me...

here is a mockup that I made, to look like what I saw today. Somebody copy this picture and repost it on another server if it gets taken down.

post it on spymac and it won't be on mac.com for them to take down! it'll be interesting to see their reactions over there when it's really announced!

Maccentral had pictures of this all over the place when it was announced. Steve Jobs talked a little about it with the xserve. If I remember correctly, the next one will use fiber instead of ata.

I thought everyone knew about that... I never saw the picture, but they did announce the RAID 3U option that was coming, in the original Xserve presentation.

Ah, fiber channel... I remember the guy talking about that. It 's supposed to have Fibre Channel ATA or something... I forget now...

He also implied that a 2U and 5U models are "natural evolutions" for the Xserve line. Everyone at the presentation though that this whole Xserve thing is a smart move for Apple.

A number of large buisnesses (they couldn't name names) have already ordered full racks with 42 Xserves (I think it's $255K per set like that). Big universities are also looking at adding this (I think Brown University was cited, ordering 8 full sets)

I watched mearly the entire presentation on Apple's site last night, except Phil Schiller's bit - he was doing his usual 'we make the hardware AND the software' stuck record impression. From what I understand, Apple see ATA as a cheaper and equally fast alternative to SCSI, which everyine else uses on their server systems. The Fibre Channel transfer system is a link (I think) betwee nthe Xserve and the 4U RAID unit and is done via Dual Fibre Channel ATA connections from the RAID controllers.
The entire RAID 4U is a solution to the NAS (Network Attached Storage) problem, in that the Xserve itself is not intended for NAS, and is entirely geared towards reliability and redundancy with the option of 7 redundant strioed and 7 active striped drives in a RAID 10 array.

I think Apple's approach is well thought out, and the Xserve is a good product for enterprise. With the addition of the RAID unit at the end of the year it will make a more complete server solution of rmany areas such ass webserving and file sharing/storage. The 'all one product' approach is a good one too.

The only thing they need to work on now is improving and enhancing OS X Server to make it really follow Apple's easy-to-use philosophy rather than just getting there in parts. I'd like to see full GUI front-ends for all tha available services in the admin tools, setting up DNS, and DHCP services is no easier than in other UNIX packages and there is still no apparent network routing support in the GUI despite the option of Dual GB Ethernet controllers on the Xserve.

quite interesting... Apple is now officially replaying it's history in fast forward mode

iMac=original mac
PowerMac G4=Dual processor 9x00 machines
Xserve="The server group" (Apple NetWork Server)

At Applefritter (deep dish) they describe the "would be" ANS300 as having been a 4 or 5u sized thing (about the size of a 7300 but wider and deeper?) and then it'd have another big rack thing available for it, like 5-8U...

would it not be interesting to know what an ANS300 would have looked like i production? with a plastic case and all lke the ANS500-700... yumm... iLike

sadly, I didn't get to go to the presentation, but I am sending off a letter via snailmail for Apple

In this letter, I am politely requesting the use of an Xserve so as I can compare it to my PC server running .NET

hmmm, iMac == compact mac?

I thought it resembled the 5x00 series of Power Macs more than anything, but that is just me.

The iMac would have had to have had a 17-19" CRT to be a 5x00 parallel. 15" was almost as microscopic in the fruit-loop era as a 9" CRT was back in the day. :rolleyes:
