I visited the Thrift Store next to my office just yesterday, after turning up nothing but a barren Quadra 610 at the Disabled Veterans Thrift Store in Glendale. Turns out the one next to my office just got a HUGE dumping of hardware! There was only one Mac, though, a Performa 630CD. They only want $10 for it, but I really have no use for it. There's no TV tuner, no ethernet, no hard drive, and doesn't seem to be any RAM. If anybody's interested in it, let me know and I can possibly pick it up.The real haul was the PC-ism. There were about 10 PC's, all of which were substantially better than you usually find in thrift shops. All but two of them were IBM Personal GL 300 computers with Pentium 200's. The other two were Cmpaq DeskPro's with Pentium 166's. Four of the 200's had 64MB of RAM, three of them had 32MB of RAM, and one had 128 (!) MB. Most had 24x CD-ROM's, only about 3 had none. All of them had ISA RJ-45 ethernet cards, and all but 2 had ISA SoundBlaster cards. None of them would boot past the DOS screen, which led me to believe that either their hard drives were blank, corrupted, or missing. Also, there were about 8 Serial-to-PS/2 mice new in shrink-wrapped boxes, along with about six SoundBlaster ISA cards in new boxes, and another 30-50 SoundBlaster ISA cards tossed into a big cardboard box. There were also four monitors, all 15" IBM, two black and two beige. I'd really like one of the black ones for my Quadra 840av, but I digress. I inquired about getting one of the IBM's, specifically the one with 128MB of RAM, and they wanted $55. I just don't have it, so unless they go lower, I can't get anything. But, if anyone is interested, especially our fellow L.A.-area members (mathgeek? ), contact me and I can lead you to 'em. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

They told me they want $55 for any of them (which of course doesn't make any sense)...but I'm hoping they'll drop the price if they hang around for a while.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

if they'll let you check the mobo, find out if it has the pads for a second SIMM slot or already has the two SIMM slots and the DAV type connector for installing a DOS card, i think i could use another one, the one in the WordWrightAV hack might be a deader.i should put an i need a 6xx DOS Compatible ad in the trading post i guess . . . whatever! jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF p.s. make sure the pad count is right for a RAM SIMM NOT the ROM SIMM on the non-DOS Compatible board! I'll check on that 630CD for ya, JT! Have to be careful, though, they tend to get pissed when you open stuff and poke around inside it...666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! Edited by - cinemafia on 25 Jun 2002 11:46:08 |

geez. They aren't very good salespeople are they? Actually, they probably don't want you to find out what crap they're actually trying to sell you._________________ Leutennant SCCHICAGO HotLineServer(closed): scchicago.dynodns.net Website(closed): http://scchicago.dynodns.net MyForumOnDelphi: http://forums.delphiforums.com/scchicago NOTE:HL AND HTTP SERVER ARE ONLY AVAILIBLE WHEN I'M ONLINE |

Didn't the DOS card for the 63x series actually connect to the '040 processor socket and the PDS [for the game controller?] -------------------- keeper of the website , master of the Quadra/Centris Stick of Justice™, and figure-head of the Peoples' PDS Republic -------------------- |

That's what happened when I tried to determine why the 950 I was about to buy didn't work - I had a look inside but got told off. At least it works well now! (it was a RAM problem)~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

both correct, but there is an additional cable feed to a DAV type connector next to the PRAM battery for video or some such. that connector and the second SIMM slot are the indicators that a card is DOS compatible. if a card has empty pads for a second DRAM SIMM instead of the ROM SIMM, hopefully it will also have pads for the DAV type connector, dunno, i've never seen one of the lamed two SIMM models, but i assume they are later runs of the LC/Q630. it would make sense to drop the original board from production, but the M*****-******s at apple couldn't put the extra SIMM slot in for fear they'd lose a high end system sale! Lately the thrifts in my area have been poor too. I collect game consoles and it looks like they jacked everything up. I have not seen any Macs in awhile, just old Mac monitors. Things should loosen up around here when school starts up again....always seems to be a surge of equipment then.

I've found that the good old days of thrift shop Mac hunting may be over. What do you think has caused this? Maybe eBay sellers clean them out before they hit the shelves?
