Finally, after many months of scoruing eBay, I scored a slot-loading SCSI CD-ROM (note the new eBay username and lack of #70 rating score )! And it's a 32x demon, to boot! Now the question is what to use it for. I was planning on putting it in my Quadra 840av, but now that just seems to milquetoast. Maybe I'll hack it into my ColorClassic...?666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

Mwaah put it in your 840av, you know you want to ;). Seriously though, slot-loaders are really useful for hacks. I presume it's normal height 1" not low profile right? Either way they do make nice additionss for Color Classics and SEs, although I'd expect at least a Mystic to go wih it -- Mark Benson FlatPackMacs http://fpm.gotdns.com 2nd Lieutenant - 68kMLA, LC Quartermaster Flat Packing Macs for 68k MLA airlift excercises Macs Liberated = 14! |

Sorry JT, I was actually watching two before I won this one. The other was the same brand (Pioneer) and 36x, but ended up getting a much higher bid, more than twice as much as I won mine for. P.S. - If you're searching for slot-loading SCSI CD-ROM's, there are really only two manufacturers of them that I know of; Pioneer and Nakamichi. If you search for either under the SCSI/CD-ROM category of eBay you should find some, if there are any. Don't bother searching for "slot-loading" because you're either get SCSI DVD-ROM's or IDE CD-ROM's. Nakamichi made some really cool multiple-disk slot-loaders, they could hold four, five or even seven CD's at the same time (much like those multi-disk in-dash CD players that Nissan and other car manufacturers have been putting in newer cars lately). They tend to go pretty high, though. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! Edited by - cinemafia on 25 Jun 2002 08:39:17 |

Oh and I'm still undecided. I really like the idea of a slot-loading CD-ROM in my Quadra 840av, but then again I also like the idea of getting one of those Ultra-Wide SCSI CD-ROM's for it. Both have an inherent cool/rare factor...666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

wtf would give you the notion to put a slot loader in a box with a ready made bezel for a tray loader!?!!!!! that's not even remotely appealing to me. it definitely hasn't got anything like the cool factor of a hack with a thin slot in the front bezel of a box that was never intended to have an internal CD!840av's are plenty cool enough without that kind of a gratuitous mod. what's with you AV guys? put a 6500 and the slot loader in your CC 'mo! . . . and next time one exceeds your price limit, EMAIL ME!!!!!! <rolleyes> jt ™. Well, my Quadra 840av (like almost all 840av's) has a caddy-loaded bezel! Getting a hold of a tray-loaded bezel is a difficult and "costs-more-than-it's-worth" process. But, I do know what you mean, and that's why I'm hesitant. However, I'm also hesitant to put the slot-loader in my ColorClassic, because it requires a steady Dremel-hand to enlarge the floppy slot and a 2.5" SCSI drive and a very rare and expensive 2.5" to 3.5" SCSI adapter and to be able to still have an internal hard drive for the hack. Maybe I should toss it in my IIci? Now that would be cool! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

Actually, I need one of those anyway. I removed the internal floppy so that I could have three hard drives, and now I have a stupid floppy hole through which I can see one of the Ultra-Wide drives inside... 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

I agree. I think it would be sweet as a drive in like the compact macs, or something even more random... like in an apple //e case or something, coming out the side. of course, you'd need to put a mac in that as well, but it would be fun. quote:

That's what I'm afraid of! I think I may truly end up putting in my IIci, that would be a fairly easy hack, but also very original, compared to the CC. Great, now I have to go look for an Ultra-Wide SCSI CD-ROM for my 840av instead... 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

It ain't hard to get a CD-ROM tray loading bezel for the 840av. I got one by asking on LEM Swap. It cost me $7.50, most of which was postage to my UK address. I also replaced the whole face plate unit with a unit from another guy in Texas as mine had an anti-theft heat stamp on it. That only cost me $16.50, which again included substantial postage charges. I definitely think you'd have to put a new bezel on unless you can find one of those early CD-RW drive with the flip down door and thin tray instead of the flat fronted bezel (which I prefer greatly). Hey, you could always cram a laptop CE drive in there -- Mark Benson FlatPackMacs http://fpm.gotdns.com 2nd Lieutenant - 68kMLA, LC Quartermaster Flat Packing Macs for 68k MLA airlift excercises Macs Liberated = 14! |

I already have one, it's a Yamaha 400t! The 840av was using it for a little while, but the CD-R connected to my 7500 broke and I had to swap it. If and when I either get a faster burner for the 7500 or get an eMac, I'll probably put the Yamaha CD-R with it's ultra-thin tray back in the Quadra! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

Yeah, all the Nakamichi changers are slot-loading. Keep in mind that they're somewhat longer than a traditional CD-ROM because they pull the disks in and store them in some kind of a sheath until they're ready to be read. You should be able to hack the door off without any problem, I've seen it done before! P.S. - The seller of the Nakamichi in the second link lives about 30 or so miles from me in case he won't negotiate on the shipping cost or if you want me to go check it out or something... 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |
