Remember Stepping Out? Back in the compact-Mac days, the savior for those of us who needed more screen real estate than the 9" B&W provided was a wonderful product from Berkeley Systems, called Stepping Out. It enabled you to create a virtual monitor of any size, over which you could pan with the mouse, like flying a helicopter over the landscape.

Stepping Out was essential for anyone who worked with large spreadsheets, large database forms, and (most of all) PageMaker layouts. It enabled me to run a small record label almost entirely on a 020-accelerated SE (which I still have) and System 6.0.8.

Even after I graduated to my IIfx and a 15" NEC 4FG monitor, I still used Stepping Out for spreadsheets and FileMaker layouts. But with System 7.1 I had to switch to black-and-white to use it, or the system would crash.

Stepping Out disappeared about the time that multi-resolution monitors became popular, but to my mind they were no subsitute for the heady freedom SO gave you; the inspired name gives the flavor. I have often found myself wishing someone would resurrect it in the PPC era.

/Mr Lynn

PS I still have it, if anyone needs a copy.

Could you upload it to one of the HL servers. This sounds interesting. I have some programs on my LCII that could use that.
Thanks! This could be the answer! UPLOAD! PLEASE!

Even if it'll only work in black and white. I'll still try it out.

None of the servers listed on the web page are responding, so I e-mailed Stepping Out II to you.

I need to find a copy of the Stepping Out II software as I recently acquired an Apple 12" monitor to use with a Mac IIsi. You said in your posting that you have a copy. I'm sending this message on a PC as I don't have a fast modem connection for my Macs [I've just recently acquired several 680x0 Macs that I'm learning to use]. Thanks.Go to Top of Page
