I've got a Newton 2100 now, and I love it. It's missing one of the back door clips, but I think i can rig something up for that. Now I need to connect it to one of my computers. I've got a Powerbook "Lombard" G3 333mhz, and a PC with WinXP. What are my options for connecting the newton to one of them. I don't have any kind of wires to connect them, so if i need to find a specific one, let me know. If i left out some information that is needed, just let me know.

Since your lombard may not have a serial modem or printer port (i'm not quite sure) Then you will need soem kind of a usb or firewire (if you have it) adapter to serial. Then you need a serial cable and some newton software and your good to go.

I just looked on everymac.com to see if you had a serial port, and you do not. So like Christophillis said, you'll need to get a usb/serial adapter which comes in many flavors. Also I hope you got the dongle with your 2100 (which btw, i envy you...), if not, you'll need that as well...

Although something just came to mind. The 2100 supports networking. So you could get a pcmcia network card and talk to your machines that way. I think they sync that way, i'm not totally sure due to the fact that i have only a 130. As far as Xp goes, i don't know if the newton connection software will work. And I'm about 99% sure that there is no software currently for OSX, so you'll have to stick with os9 or earlier. A 68k would be a great machine for your new newton to talk to.

If you have some free time read up on what this dude has been working on for the past few years. I've used his betas since the beginning. www.kallisys.com. It's his ATA support program than is what i'm referring to, although guyot has done some other amazing things towards the newton.

You need a "dongle" which is the adapter that goes from that weird, flat port on the top of your Newton next to the power link.

you can;t use Ethernet cards till you get all the drivers and such installed, so I'd either find a dongle to borrow, or buy one off Ebay or somewheres.

Jeez, I'm going insane on eBay trying to get a dongle for my Newt 2100. Anybody know how much those things retailed for new? I feel like I'm getting ripped off if I have to pay over $30 US but it looks like I might have to. I found a few for lower but they say they don't ship to Canada from the US.

Bah. Anybody here want to sell me one?

Oh! About the adapter... I was going to sync using my PBook520 but this USB to Serial adapter deal sounds cool. But will the Newton Connect stuff work in Classic? I don't really want to reboot.

I have a feeling it'll just be easier (and cheaper) to use the 520

Yes, the dongle is a VERY important part to the newton. Actually, it is the next important to the newton itself. I spent all day today shopping on ebay for newton stuff (and i was successful, but i'll post that in a new thread). There is an adapter that is the interconnect style on one end and a male serial plug on the end, it's long like a serial cable. you might be able to find those a little cheaper than the dongle, since i don't believe it was made by apple. I will be testing newton software in classic asap with my 2000, that i just got. I'll post any news. I have a feeling that it's not going to work well, especially with apps such as mail.

As far as sync-ing with apps in osx, I know it can be done. there is a itunes plugin that allows you to download music onto you newton, they are planning on big success with guyot's ata upport. I'll find a link later. If I wasn't so retarded when it comes to programming i might consider trying to write something.
