I found a SPARCStation 2 (no monitor, kbd, or mouse-just the computer) today that was about to be trashed, is it worth picking up? I looked up the specs, everything on that computer seems very popriety, is it worth looking for parts for it? The idea of using Solaris on it intrigues me, I never saw one of these machines before.

This guy seems to have had a good experience with his SPARC 2. If I can't get it to work, then maybe I can just strip it for parts. (9 4MB 30 pin SIMMs doesn't sound too bad)

Get it, by all means! I'll take it if you don't want it. Solaris is quite nice, CDE is excellent, and NeXTSTEP will run on it, though not the CD that's on the Hotline server.

http://www.obsolyte.com/sunFAQ/serial/ describes how to use a serial console to get into a Sparcstation without a monitor. Could be useful.

I wish I had one, I have the monitor for one and all, I am very interested in alternative workstations.

sorry, that menu style KILLED me! anyhoo, great links, especially:

http://www.stokely.com/unix.serial.port.resources/A-B-Ycablepinout.html

that's the best RJ-45 illustration i've ever seen, is that the correct color coding for 10BaseT or is it a serial link specific color coding? (not that it matters if it's consistent andy you're not making crossovers.

I picked it up an hour ago. It seems to work, I can hear the fan when I turn it on. I don't know whether or not it accessess any drives, though-I can't hear anything over that fan.

University of Michigan's Propery Diposition Center has lots of SPARC stuff, most of it for resonable prices.

Pretty much every university disposes of old machines. MU has a surplus auction every Wednesday (a perfect place to pick up old UNIX boxes from the engineering dept.).

Then maybe I could get some surplus parts from Brooklyn College, that's only a few blocks away from me.

yup, universitys are the best places to look for old machines in... the Bar-Ilan University's mac tech guy is sending me a couple of quadras for free. they were going to throw them away. i could have probebly got away with taking 5 or 6 old macs from them, but i barly have room for all of them as it is...
