I was hoping it would not come to this, but I am having one major brain fart. First off let me tell you I am a winblows user trying to kick the habit. Anyhow, I have got an 840av, running OS 8.1, 1.2 gig hard drive and 40 mb ram, IE 3.01 and Netscape 3.01 (soon to be updated). Internet connectivity was running fine under 7.5.5, but other programs were not so I decided to update to 8.1, now I cannot remember how to set it up properly for the internet using my cable modem (yes I have the AAUI to ethernet thing). Been working on this all day, but I guess I missed something so obvious I just cannot see it. thx mdh

Go to your "TCP/IP" control panel, select "Ethernet" from the pull-down menu at the top of the window, and tell it to use "DHCP server" on the other pull-down menu. -that's how my cable modem works. I did both of those, also changed the "Internet Dialer" to ethernet. Maybe I just need to sleep on it and start fresh in the morning.

Also you should set the user mode (in the TCP/IP control panel) to advanced, then hit the options button and make sure that "Load only when needed" is UNchecked.Did you do a clean install of 8.1? If not, perhaps chucking out your TCP/IP preferences and setting them again from scratch might help. Do you have a "Link" indicator on your cable modem? if so, does it light up when you plug the ethernet cable into the AAUI adaptor? If not, you may have a loose connection somewhere. BTW, you picked one helluva machine to help you kick the Windoze habit! Cheers! I did a fresh install of 8.1 yesterday, that is the only thing on the 840. Ethernet connection is good (is there a way to "ping" the connection like in DOS?). All lights on the AAUI adapter are go. TCP/IP is set to connect via: Ethernet; configure: Using DHCP Server; IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router Address, Name Server Addr: <will be supplied by server>. Under TCP/IP Options, Active is checked and load only when needed is unchecked.Anything I'm missing? BTW: The eternet cable and modem are good, otherwise I could not be sending this out. Did you set your Appletalk control panel to 'Ethernet'?/Mr Lynn Curator of: SE (6.0.4), SE w. 020 accelerator (6.0.8), SE w. no HD, IIfx (7.1), IIci (bad HD); plus various PPCs in family (blue G3/350 is main Mac these days). |

AppleTalk is just for file sharing, not for TCP/IP. I wish it was really that easy to fix internet connection voodoo Artillery Commander/Engineer, 68kMLA Liberated: LCII , III+ IIci Quadra 700 (w/contraband card), 800, and 840av P550, 410 Contraband: Beige G3/300 MT o/c 400mhz (2) 6100's Keeper of the 68kmla Hotline mirror server: 68k.dyndns.org
