Hey there, folks!
My good friend Aubrey has made me some CD's with some odd AVI files, which Quicktime won't play. In fact, I've never been able to get Quicktime to play any AVI's... every time I try, it says that "extra software to complete the operation is needed, but not av available on Apple's servers"!? I've read about how to get OS 9's QT to work with AVI's (by manually downloading and installing the proper codec's), but I've not seen anything about this for OS X. BTW, I'm running OS X 10.1.5, with the new QT6 beta (QT 5 didn't work right, either).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
SpaceBoy

There are codec's available for OS X. Go to versiontracker and look there under X. There are also decode/encoders taht convert the avi file into qtime movie files. While i havent had the best of luck either, occaisionally these work. Hope that helps in some way or another...

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

The last option would be Winblows Media Payer

Quicktime does not like DivX AVI movies. The open source DivX decoder ffmpeg has been ported to the Mac OS, and it works well, though I am not sure where to download it. Even after installing the codec, you must use Avi2Mov to convert the DivX-encoded AVI into a Quicktime movie, or the sound will not play correctly.

You just solved the mystery of why my Divx movies won't play in QT with sound.

It doesn't play AVIs, at least not the OS X version, it only plays Windblows Medioca.

Just a quick tip-try videolan (freeware, also available on Versiontracker, etc.) in OSX-works great with most divx/avi files without conversion, plays VCD's in OSX, and more....
More info at Xlr8yourmac.com, in Alternate OSX DVD players section.
In OS 9,x, Divx Doctor II with proper codecs also works (info in the read me) but will create another, often much larger file.

I don't like VideoLanClient too much. I tried playing my DivX of the Matrix on it, and the audio stuttered. It comes in a package, so you can't just delete it if you don't like it. With some improvement, it'll be insanely great enough for OS X.

My divx are bad after I convert them with Divx Doctor II, it changes them to .avi then I play in quicktime and its choppy (badly) on the sound but plays the video good. I have a iMac 266 with 64 RAM, whats up?

All video apps need a lot of hd space for scratch files, especially when you're doing a conversion. Typically at least twice the size of the original film. For example, I converted a 700mb .avi with Divx Doctor IIl, set the preferences to make stand-alone movie, and decompress audio and the finished conversion (new file) was 1.5g. (had to have at least 2-3g free on my drive to get this far) This seems to give the best results, however, in OS 9. x
Virtual memory should be off, so the iMac w/64mb ram might have problems either way.
As for Videolan, it played the same unconverted file no problem right away in OSX-some stuttering in full screen mode but fine in normal mode-I just set screen to 640 x480 and get full screen that way ;-)
BTW, this is on Beige G3 466 w/448mb ram....
Unintstalling Videolan should be as simple as dragging it to the trash.
