My Duo 280c (undocked, running 7.5) can't seem to recognize my StyleWriter II. I tried to print the Desktop and I got an error saying that the printer was either not connected or turned on. I switched the chooser from Printer to Modem port (not that it matters, they are both the same serial port) and it happened again. I tried to print from another program (Adobe Acrobat Reader) and I got the same error. I know that docked Duos have problems when printing to SW II's, but do undocked Duos have the same hardware glitch?Wonko The Sane Engineer-in-training 3 Macs Liberated "You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool."- Wonko The Sane |

i'll bet a shiny new two-bit piece that there's an internal POS modem in there that is screwing you over! make sure it's turned off in the control panel and get one of the serial port clearing utilities to keep handy, even if it's not a internal modem you need one constantly on any 'book with a single serial port.when apple combined the barely adequate max. config. of 1.5 serial ports on the mac into their idea of a "dual purpose" serial port, the weighted average comes out to somewhere about .75, yielding one "dually-useless" serial port. you should try getting the internal modem, a printer, and an external modem to play nicely together when you throw america offlines bug ridden dialup crud into the mix <rolleyes> that shouldn't happen to darth gates! jt ™. You might want to check if that serial port (printer?) is being used by ApppleTalk, if so change the port or disable AppleTalk.Jeremy "I'll see you on the Dark Side Of The Moon" - Pink Floyd Covert Ops 68k Hacks General Macs Liberated:18 ENTER THROUGH THE GATES |

I do not publically condone such blatant piracy on these boards, and either should you, Ti!Wonko: have you tried plugging in the printer into the "printer" serial port? there's gotta be a shareware or freeware program available! search the database on "the disk" from a recent MA and somebody will have the ROM. i wonder if we have a complete collection of "the disk" as a group?jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

CommCloser CommCloser is a program to close communication ports left open by applications that "forget" to close the comm port. Several fax programs have this bug, and my favorite labelling program, MyDiskLabeler, has that nasty habit. This little utility lets you reclaim that port without rebooting your computer. System 6 and 7 compatible. Free (Whateverware - the programmer asks you to do something good, e.g. phoning your mother, baking cookies, etc.).

You might also mention a utility called CommCloser that forces a serial port to close. Sometimes ports get left open and you can't get communication programs to work without restarting. CommCloser closes the port and lets you avoid a restart.

here's a description of how it works:http://www.macemail.com/emailer/CEMH/scripts.shtml
quote:
Closing Modem Port[Q] Is there an AppleScript or another application that can be filed in my Startup items folder that will close the modem port whenever my Mac is restarted? [A] There is a little app called "CommCloser" that I know of that will close your modem connection. [A] I tracked down an OSAX that has the appropriate commands, Serial Port Commands OSAX, then threw together a QND AppleScript that hangs up the modem: set sPort to open serial port "Modem Port" serial port write "+++" & return to sPort timeout 300 serial port write "ATH" & return to sPort timeout 300 close serial port sPort It's not pretty, but it does the job. For those of you who are wondering, I asked the question above because, whenever I crash in the midst of a PPP connection (anyone using Navigator?), the SupraExpress modems (and any other modem, for all I know) will not disconnect when the Mac restarts. That means I have to reach around and disconnect the modem from the phone line (the SupraExpress plugs into the ADB port for power) to regain a dial tone. This AppleScript can go in the Apple Menu Items folder or, better yet, in the Startup Items folder.
it's all greek to me! jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

It's a Duo. There IS no "Printer" serial port. BTW, I was able to get it to stop telling me that the Serial Port is in use by another application, Appletalk was on (thanks Ti). I still get the same original error though, even after restarting. Is there a freeware alternative to ComCloser? I fixed the serial port problem, but now I have another one: the printer isn't accepting any paper. I put in a large pile of paper, and the SW II tries to get the paper from the tray, can't, and reports that it is out of paper. Any solutions?Wonko The Sane Engineer-in-training 3 Macs Liberated "You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool."- Wonko The Sane |

is it set for thicker envelopes?what ended up being the problem with the serial port and what was the fix? IMHO, it's important that there be a "debreifing" report of results in threads like this or searching the archives for troubleshooting solutions in the future will be singularly frustrating. jt ™. I fixed the paper problem by pushing up the metal part of the paper tray, it pushed the paper close enough to the mouth of the printer so it could get it.
