hi,
do i have to use 60 ns 72-pin SIMMs in the Q840AV or are 70 ns and 80 ns ones also work if they are all 72-pinn SIMMs?

60ns is a requirement. Any slower and you will get lots of errors or maybe even prevent the machine from starting until you remove them again.

so, which other machines used these 60 ns SIMMs? (so i'll know which one to canibilize ;) )
if i can get a Q650 or Q660Av with more memory (say, 32mb-48mb) will they work better then the Q840AV even though they have a slower CPU? and can i use the 60 ns SIMMs on 70 ns/ 80 ns machines? (i'll bet you know where i'm heading...)

As far as I can tell, the only other mac that requires 60ns 72-pin SIMMs is the Quadra 800, which, essentially, is an 840av without the DSP and 2MB VRAM cap. All the other Quadras and G1's only require 70ns or 80ns SIMMs.

Yep!

I am unclear on this now. I read in one document that it did and on EveryMac there is no mention. I'm gonna check the developer docs and see. Will report tomorrow.

Quadra 650 I think. Depends if it or the Quadra 800 came first.

Quadra 650 and 800.

No, it's one of the many finer detials missing from AS. It is covered on EveryMac however.

The Q800 requires that fast ram? I must have gotten lucky. I popped in the first 4 simms that came to hand and all is well! Huh...

since no one answered, i'll ask again:
if i can get a Q650 or Q660Av with more memory (say, 32mb-48mb, in comparison to 24mb on the 840AV) will they work better then the Q840AV even though they have a slower CPU?

Depends on what you mean by "work better"! For example...

If you mean opening more applications at a time or devoting more memory to a given application, then yes.

But, if you mean render files faster or capture video at a higher resolution/frame rate, then no, RAM or no isn't going to change that.
